Away Day in Sunderland in D&G

Wednesday, February 21, 2018

William and Kate spent Wednesday in the northeast of the country on an Away Day in Sunderland. The couple were booked to see an historic firehouse that has been converted into a new cultural center, and to visit a new bridge that is under construction in the area--the Northern Spire. The Duchess arrived with a big smile on her face and wearing a bespoke Dolce & Gabbana coat.

The couple undertook a walkabout to greet the fans who had gathered.

KP
The firehouse has languished for many years in disrepair, but is now a hive of activity for the local community and serves as a location for a number of community programs.

KP
Among the programs for children is this aerial dancing, which appears to be a real blast. And probably great exercise!

KP
Kate took her D&G coat off inside the firehouse, which gave us a peek at her new Phaedra dress by Séraphine maternity. Is reminds me a lot of the Tabitha Webb space dress Kate wore a year or so ago.

The big news of the day was that Kate got a small henna tattoo (which washes off within a week or so, I think) and even asked fro a package of bindis to give to Charlotte.

I am sure Kate has albums of mommy and daddy's trips, and given how much children love color, Charlotte probably is drawn to the pictures from India.

After their time at the firehouse, it was off to the Northern Spire bridge. According to KP's tweets, the "1,550-tonne pylon structure is twice as high as Nelson’s Column and taller than Big Ben's clock tower and has provided new jobs and investment for the city."

KP
After the initial greeting, Kate changed from her Tod's heels to Stuart Weitzman Half n Half boots and donned a hard hat.

Obviously, the couple was shown around the construction site, and each took a hand tightening a bolt on the bridge.

Kate's coat was bespoke Dolce & Gabbana, and I very frankly was not a fan. The large front panel with the oversized buttons was, to my mind, about as unflattering to her expanding bump as could have been designed. The very prominent stitching was also jarring to me. Overall, I felt this coat made Kate look bulky and ponderous, which, as we have seen (thanks to more flattering designs), she certainly is not.

I was disappointed that we didn't get a lot of great photos of the Phaedra by Séraphine inside the firehouse. Again, though, it wasn't a smash hit for me. The pattern is a little busy, and I feel we've exhausted these prints with the slew of L.K. Bennett midis Kate has worn in the past few years. The cut was flattering, though, and I loved it with the black stockings and heels.

I feel like I am a Negative Nancy in this post, but this ensemble didn't set my fashion pulse racing.  On the bright side, it is always so fun to see William and Kate on any joint engagement, and I particularly enjoy those events that see them wearing hard hats or any specialized gear. That's always a fashion change of pace. Despite the ensemble, Kate was glowing, and the many images of her from the bridge are absolutely lovely. Better luck next time on the clothes front, I am sure!

  1. I don't hate the coat. I don't love the colour, but I do like the design.

I don't like the dress, but have almost always found that Kate and I have different tastes in patterns. I agree that the dress seems very similar to her space dress.

I think both sets of footwear look great with the coat.

My biggest complaint is that I see no connection between the dress and the coat. This dress, with one of her very recent bright blue coats would have been much more complementary.

    1. I don’t get the dress with the coat, either. A bit of a mish-mash. I loved the boots with the coat & her hair looked smashing :)

    2. Kiwi--We are used to seeing HM's made to match coats and dresses. At least we avoid the "matchy-matchy" complaints with this outfit. ;+) (By the way, Kiwi Gal, my daughter and her husband recently holidayed on North Island. I had insisted they spend at least one vacation in New Zealand so they could tell me all about it)

Green by any name is still green, I guess. AOL called this coat Forest Green, but called the BAFTA gown Hunter Green-which has been called many names for green, for varying reasons. I don't see much difference. Even fashion sites can't agree.

Happy to note that she is likely wearing support hose. The swelling yesterday was worrisome. At least she has a few days off now before her final pre-"lying-in" engagements. I wonder if they will even return to London but instead go straight to Amner Hall? Isn't it closer than London? Perhaps Nanny or family have the children already at Anmer.
Finally! A photo that captures Ms. Quinn, although she is plastered against the door about as far away from the photographers as is possible in that room. That may explain why only a few sightings. She avoids the camera!
Another example of interesting photos I haven't seen elsewhere (Thank-you, Jane!) --the one showing the (although relatively small) bank of photographers. It is easy to see why sometimes charity visits are made quietly. I can't imagine anyone reacting naturally in front of that.anon1

I just re-read my comment. Talk about a mish-mash...what a jumble of thoughts!

    3. anon1, “mishmash” is my new favourite word! ;) I love how HM’s dresses perfectly complement her coats, but I agree, nobody can complain that Kate is being too matchy-matchy here :P I hope your daughter & son-in-law had a wonderful time here in NZ & took lots of photos! Next time they will have to visit the South Island, as they both have stunning scenery :)

    4. "Mishmash" is a word that brings me fond memories. I just used it again the other day and I will probably keep using it for awhile. ;+) Such a wonderfully descriptive word.

Kate has often used the layer approach to creating a fresh look for various events on a multi-engagement day. I think the coat and dress were meant as two separate outfits. The way the coat was firmly buttoned down precluded any chance of the two being seen together in one photo- except--didn't she have her coat open, at least briefly? I don't think they were supposed to be viewed as a unit. As another commenter has remarked, the accessories matched both outfits.
My SIL has been to Christchurch and other areas of South Island a number of times for conferences. My daughter is a bit leery of earthquakes. The strange thing is-there was not one EQ the whole time they were there but as soon as they left the tremours have been almost daily, but no very large ones. They are also huge hiking enthusiasts and there are wonderful, well-maintained hiking trails with incredible scenery. (also true of South Island, I'm sure).
Yes, I was treated to a travelogue --.Waterfalls..ocean views. So Green! anon1

OK, that was a little off-topic, but I Was promoting a Commonwealth country and the gathering in London is coming up. Ha!

    5. That’s lovely, anon1! There’s no better way to enjoy NZ than being in the great outdoors (now I am shamelessly promoting my own country :P) Yes, the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting is coming up soon! It will be very exciting for Harry, who will be accepting a prominent leadership role at the meeting.

  3. I really do not like this coat, I agree with Jane. The buttons and cut look bulky in front, it seems the buttons are set very wide and it looks awkward. I usually love her in green ( loved the BAFTA dress) but this is just a bit dull, not a wow, not even a yeah! LOL
I don’t mind the dress not particularly matching the coat because it seemed they were meant to be separate outfits. The black and white print of the dress does not clash with the coat and the hose and shoes look great with both. Dress is just meh, she looked nice, but no jaw dropper.
I love seeing the Cambridge’s together, they appear to enjoy each other’s company and have a close connection.
I am still betting we will see an early April baby, given the size of the bump! I think Kate has been looking particularly lovely lately, I love her hair length, her face a bit fuller, and pregnancy glow.

    ReplyDelete
  4. At first, I thought this coat was the same as the burgundy one Kate wore on the Scandinavia tour--just in a different color. I happen to love this shade of green, but I preferred the other coat. The color is gorgeous. However, the buttons are a bit too much for my tastes. On the other hand, I love the dress! I really like the print and simple lines. I think this style is very flattering and I prefer it to the fussier dresses Kate usually chooses.

  5. The coat is a beautiful color. I am always amazed by women who manage to look so beautiful at this stage of pregnancy. Or any stage of pregnancy--I was always sick the whole 9 months!

  6. I loved the coat! I think Catherine looks beautiful in green.

  7. I fear that’s we may have reached that point in her pregnancy where dressing for these occasions has become a bit challenging. Maternity dresses, like this one from Séraphine tend to be quite pattern-heavy. But onwards and upwards.

  8. I like the coat and the dress, but quite candidly, I don't care what she wears at present, just glad to see her out and about. Another engagement on March 6th has just been announced at a school in Oxford, so I suspect baby is not expected before the middle of April.
There is also a meeting of the Forum( including Meghan) announce for the end of March.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Time will certainly tell. However, if we go by the announced mid-late April time-line for Charlotte--that would have left only a few weeks from her last engagement then. Wasn't there even some kind of closed parking areas issue that went with that schedule? I think end of March, first week of April is still a good possibility. At least, I hope so. I can't picture her going seven more weeks, considering that most of the weight gain of a fetus occurs in the last eight weeks, which I think we have seen evidence of the past few weeks.
And, as we have learned, engagements/tours can and have been canceled or postponed with her pregnancies.
A meeting of the Forum likely would be at KP and we usually don't even have photos of that, other than seated ones.
I think it is possible that a little creative distraction might be behind these announcements to avoid the Great Kate Wait and give her more of a chance for a private trip to the hospital. There is always such a huge media build-up, including helicopters over her parent's home etc.
I just can't believe H&M would plan a wedding possibly for only four weeks after Kate gives birth. Aside from her physical appearance, she would not have enough time to gain back the physical and even emotional strength required to be featured prominently at a wedding, not to mention getting through two receptions. Would she even want to be away from her newborn that long? It would be extremely poor form on H&M's part, in my opinion. anon1

      Delete
    2. I guess when you are planning a wedding, you can't please everyone. Although, to be honest, I imagine that Kate is simply overjoyed to see Harry happy. They appear to be very close. H & M may also have wanted to have the wedding before London and surrounds become very busy with the tourist season. Kate is very lucky that she regains her shape rather quickly. She may have got to the stage also where she feels comfortable enough in her own skin to attend an event like this with a few extra kilos and a well designed dress. With W & K's staff and family members, I'm sure she will be fine to leave the baby at Windsor Castle to slip down to St George's Chapel for the ceremony, duck back to Windsor to feed bub, then zoom off to the reception. I've done it quite a few times myself - with support from family members of course. Kate is a third timer; she will be all over this.

I agree totally with Jane - as usual. The coat is miles too bulky for Kate's frame. A couple of the coast Kate has worn have been surprisingly drab, particularly when she has so many beautiful ones that she could repeat. I'm sure most of us would certainly understand that the practicality of a repeat during maternity.

    6. I am sure Harry didn't give a though to how Kate would look after birth. Other than being sure the wedding wasn't on the due date, he wouldn't think about her postpartum. He is a man and a brother in law and has never had children. Doesn't mean he doesn't care for Kate, of course, but he cannot imagine what it is to be a nursing mother in the first month. Nobody that hasn't been there can. And even mothers forget, or we wouldn't have more children!
That being said, IMO Windsor will be easier for Kate, as they are sure to have their rooms there, and she can just appear at the ceremony and go back to her baby. I hope she can be there for George and Charlotte... It will be a stressing day for her!

Kate appeared the day after that trooping at polo in a pretty clingy shirt and skinny jeans and looked fantastic.
Anyways really the bigger thing is - most women get bigger bumps on second or third pregnancies, etc, just bc those muscles are already stretched out from previous pregnancies. I will say I've heard a lot of pregnant women mention they thought it was esp noticeable for them on their third pregnancies, though that's ofc just anecdotal. But point is, I wouldn't nec take her bigger bump this time to mean she's due esp soon.

  10. I love the color of the coat but not the coat. Wouldn't a swing style coat look adorable with her pregnant belly? I also didn't like the color of the coat with the color of the dress. I thought I was seeing two separate events when I saw the dress. With a closet full of coats like she has I would certainly have chosen a blue or black coat for this dress.

All that said, she looked radiant and happy. Her and Wills together is always a win no matter what the fashion is.

  11. I know Kate is in her 7th month, but she has top fashion designers at her feet that would happily design for HRH. I wish she would step out of comfort zone and mix it up. The double breasted military style coats, the high neck, long sleeve, lace, floral, etc dresses are so tired looking. She looked gorgeous at the BAFTAS. A v neckline is so becoming on her. I know she has to dress conservative as a Duchess, but IMO, she could jazz it up a bit.

  12. I think the coat is quite nice, not bulky at all, she looks barely pregnant in some pictures. The dress is lovely, very flattering and I am not tired of the prints! 14. I agree Jane! The purple D&G vs this green one are day and night - she looks sleek w a great bump just a week or two ago in the purple, and wide and cumbersome in the green (though we know she’s nothing of the sort!). I read an interesting comment on another site that the green coat MAY be modifiable to use post-partum. If so, that is neat (and I guess remains to be seen). The other awesome thing in the news recently was The Queen’s attendance at Fashion Week with Angela Kelly. If you haven’t seen the articles, it’s totally worth looking it up! HM looks STUNNING and both ladies exude such class and sophistication. Just so fun!

    2. Almost identical-. If one overlooks the pockets, the stitching, and the tailoring differences on the purple one, not to mention two fewer rows of buttons. I think the necklines are different, too.

  18. I'm going to go ahead an make a speculation. It has been just over two weeks since W&K left Norway and in that two weeks the way she's carrying the baby has changed dramatically. My speculation is that she's due sooner rather than later and that she's having a girl. Just a guess. I think she's more comfortable scheduling engagements later in her pregnancy because this is her third and she's got two past experiences to draw from.

I hope she is accompanied by that midwife/professor woman. And a mobile L&D room. She would either be taking a very short break before the birth (which was a possible plan with Charlotte) or
the birth isn't expected until mid April or later. Which is not compatible with the May 19 wedding. She may look good, but-if you know much about HG,you will understand that one's body does not completely recover in just six months after the acute phase.anon1

PS Can you really imagine that baby growing for another six weeks? Or more? Just think how much he has grown the last six weeks. Before the tour. She really would have to resort to Granma's couch cover for attire.

    7. Have you ever been pregnant anon 7:40? Do not see my comment as critics, but maybe it helps to understand a bit how pregnancy works. Every case is different of course, but generally, pregnant women do many thing until the due date end, and even beyond. They go out, do sports, go to work (where i live we have no maternity leave prior to birth, so i worked also after my due date...), have fun, meet friends, dress up, etc. Seriously, its not even healthy to just rest on the couch if there is no medical reason like that the baby might be born too early. HG in the first trimester is not included in these reasons since even then, your body needs something to do to recover properly. And do not get me wrong, i do not doubt that she had HG, but if it does not come with weight loss, of course your body can recover much more easily. Since she even gained during the HG-time, she was probably taken care for very well by doctors, that is so important!
Either way, she might do more engagements, or might not, but I am sure she will not be sitting on the couch until the baby is born ;) she knows very well that an active lifestyle is beneficial.

Please feel free to ignore the rest of this comment. Ha!anon1

I just found it strange that every other engagement has been announced ahead, usually about ten days to two weeks on KP Twitter, except for embargoed or security sensitive visits, which have shorter notice. Perhaps press releases that include the POW are issued by CH and differ from announcements strictly for WCHM on KP Twitter. I'll check the CH site. Otherwise, it really makes no sense why KP has not mentioned the 12th appearance. Maybe KP is hedging its bets on the 17th appearance, pending Kate's status. But I am sure William will be there.
William going to Middle East, Israel, this summer, according to KP, at the request of the government. He has been very busy with his workplace mental health and online resources for employers projects.

    3. Here is my wish list then: Since we haven't seen it revisited during this pregnancy, I hope she wears the beautiful pink coat she wore a few years ago to the Commonwealth Service! Maybe with a new hat to designate the difference between each appearance. Fingers crossed!

    4. With the pearl buttons, Robin? That is a lovely coat. There were photos of her in the carriage and on the balcony, for the Queen's birthday, I think. I don't recall a photo of her from the side without an obstructed view. My point being, I think she may not fit into it by then. There was also a bespoke apricot outfit. The were photos of her walking down the aisle at WA.I remember being surprised by the pregnancy progress.
I think by the 12h she may need a new outfit; but if she wears the pink coat, I think you're right- a new hat would be just the ticket. anon1

    5. McQueen, Robin. She wore it for both Trooping in June,2013 and CD in 2015-about five weeks before George and in early March, nearly eight weeks before Charlotte.
The outfit I was thinking of was the JP champagne coat and lace dress. It was the last event she attended before George, I believe it was. It was for the Service of Thanksgiving for the Queen's birthday. Since she wore the McQueen again, perhaps she will repeat the JP. She looked absolutely gorgeous. anon1

PS I still think there was an apricot coat with a beige dress but this is the one I would like to see again.

    6. She's carrying so low now that maybe none of them will fit and she'll need a new one. The champagne you mentioned is also so lovely and the apricot coat.

  29. I think the announcement has come from BP as there are 10 members of the RF plus Ms Markle attending.
Seemingly after the service The Duke and Duchess with Harry and Meghan are going to a reception and then in the evening Charles; Camilla and William are guests of Baroness Scotland at Marlborough House.

    2. I can't figure out how it is that MM is going to all of these family events pre-marriage when nobody, including Kate, did. Harry must have some powerful persuasion with Granny!

Jean, from your local take, how are people feeling about MM? I've read the comments sections on various UK websites and they are not kind to her at all.

    3. William was still an air rescue pilot in Wales during their engagement. He was not attending all events so neither would Kate. Prior to that, she was seated prominently with her parents at his induction into the Order of the Garter while they were dating, before the engagement-a comparative time during which Meghan was still hiding behind cars.
My theory is the government/Queen saw a great PR opportunity with Meghan. With the Commonwealth being such a diverse population, having her on the platform with members of the RF sets the stage, so to speak, for the up-coming Commonwealth conference.
Also, as an American, having her as a part of the RF can't hurt trade negotiations with the US during Brexit transition.
I was watching a doc on the "Windsor" family and noted that HM's Father, George VI, became frustrated with South Africa's separation of the races during the family's months long tour of British Africa in 1947 and decided to personally pin awards on some recipients when the protocol was to hand it to someone else to pin on the person. I believe then Princess Elizabeth spoke of the diversity of the Commonwealth/Empire in her famous 21st birthday speech from South Africa. The " ...my whole life, whether it be long or short, will be in SERVICE to..." speech. (which HM did not write but has remained faithful to its themes.)
There may be a few not-so-happy RF members; but on the whole, I think HM and probably Charles see the wisdom of expanding the genetic pool of the RF. Plus Meghan appears to be about more than her genes and her country of birth.

I'm not Jane, but... some internet sites would allow unkind/untrue remarks about Mother Theresa. (Not to mention Kate) I try to stay away from them. anon1

  30. Jane--when you get to Kate's NPG engagement--there is a rumor going around the internet that Kate did not select the photos on which she remarked. She did. The photographs chosen for the larger exhibition were selected by museum curators. Kate then chose some photos from that group to comment on.
    (NPG Twitter/Victorian Giants, 2/16/2018.)
Also, if you come across the term "Patron's Trail," it would be great if you would define it. Apparently, it is the "first ever." anon1

  31. I had to go back and look to refresh my memory; the pink McQueen is lovely but I’m not sure it would fit at this point, it’s hard to tell. I also liked the 2013 champagne and lace, that would probably still fit! She always looks so slim to me during her pregnancies, I think her height helps and I’m sure she eats mindfully.
Hope you’re feeling better, Jane. I am missing your lovely comments! Take care!

  32. Does anyone really think a "palace insider" who is indiscreet enough to leak to the press actually knows Kate's due date?

    1. Pot-stirring? Ha!
You mean the St. George's Day rumor, Robin? That is April 23 this year. Nearly seven more weeks, with the last eight weeks being the time of a baby's greatest pre-natal growth. If it isn't twins, not a chance. I think it could be one of their famous fake leaks to see who can be trusted. Otherwise, more flim-flam. anon1.
PS if the date were more reasonable, I'd suggest someone such as an ultrasound tech. For enough money it would be worth it to some to lose a job.
