Kate Recycles Beulah for Commonwealth Service

Monday, March 12, 2018

Today the British Royals marked Commonwealth Day with the annual service at Westminster Abbey. It was a particularly exciting year as Meghan Markle made her debut at a formal royal family event. This was the first really hat-worthy event for Meghan, and her first public engagement with the Queen!

KP
William, Kate, Harry, and Meghan arrived in two Range Rovers at the same time, and walked into the Abbey as a group:

Kate and Meghan went with opposite shades of the color spectrum, which complemented each other nicely. Meghan's ensemble was Amanda Wakeley.

I thought Kate might choose something new for today, but she dusted off her Chiara coat from Beulah London for the service, pairing it with the Lock & Co. Tiffany hat she wore to the dedication of the Afghanistan Memorial just last year. It's an elegant pairing and a great recycle on both counts.

KP
Kate's shoes are her Mallory pumps from Rupert Sanderson and the clutch is Jimmy Choo's Celeste. The Duchess once again wore these earrings she debuted last month, but continue to stymie the style sleuths. She added a matching brooch, which I think helped clarify that this is not the jewelry given to the Queen in the 40s, as formally hypothesized. Since these pieces haven't been paired with anything in the vaults, I think it is more likely they are modern additions to her personal collection. Hopefully time (and someone's research!) will tell. :)

Kate looked magnificent today. This Beulah coat is a color that suits HRH so well and I love the graceful flare of the silhouette. I know some feel this hat is too big, but I think it balances her pregnant figure well and adds a punch of glamour. Her hair was beautifully styled this afternoon, and she added her own glow to look absolutely magnificent. A big win!

  1. Ouch. Not even a teeny comment about MM?

I loved her hat but was less enthused about the outfit.

    1. This a Kate blog. Let's not try to insinuate something. There are plenty of MM blogs if that is your interest. The writer of the blog determines the subject matter. Who are we to tell her what to write. I'm sure she has her reasons. Perhaps she didn't like MM's outfit. That would invite unwanted controversy.

    2. Jane's whole first paragraph is about Meghan. I find it difficult to believe that anyone who actually read the text could have missed that. anon1

    3. Jane mentioned her in the first paragraph and included videos of the two couples arriving at Westminster Abbey. :)

    4. ROYALFAN, (is that you?) We each had a similar thought within thirty minutes of each other.
I appreciate the tone this blog has taken and I see no reason why we have to turn this into a Meghan/Kate contest as other blogs have. They are each lovely and accomplished in unique ways and neither would
make a claim to being perfect, I am sure.
I also realise this tone likely did not happen without a lot of help from our adm. Jane, who must filter through these comments. I appreciate that this is a Kate blog first and foremost, but sometimes others involved in an event must be mentioned. I have found that coverage of others is both fair and appropriate at these times. anon1

anon 9:23 actually agreed with the first anonymous that Jane did not mention Meghan, ("she had her reasons") while seeming to support Jane. I see this mis-leading pattern fairly often. Apparently, neither Anonymous read the post or viewed the photos and videos. This is why I sometimes get the impression that SOMETIMES commenters are talking to and answering themselves. anon1

    5. Surely you jest. Did you not read the first paragraph? Meghan was also mentioned several times throughout the post. Good videos and some of the photos I hadn't seen on any other websites. Kate really looks very confident these days- more so than usual. I would be exhausted in those heels, but she manages.

    6. Although she was mentioned in the blog there was no evaluative remarks about MM's outfit . That was what I assume the first anon was complaining about. I stand by my previous remarks.

    7. 9.23, I had a similar thought.

Anon1, yes, it's me. I don't use my account on any other device. Great minds? :-)

But seriously, on more than one occasion Jane has indicated that she would not blog about Meghan. Her choice, no? And the regular posters here are well aware of her time constraints. To be fair, Jane mentioned MM in the first paragraph and then went on to do what she does here...update us on Kate. :-)

This is a tricky time for royal watching; comparisons are natural and they can be innocuous. Unfortunately, some people welcome the opportunity to take the entertainment aspect of it to new lows...and it takes some of the fun out of what should be a relaxing hobby. πŸ™

    8. Although Meghan was discussed, pointedly, there was no comment about her outfit. This blog has talked about Meghan’s outfits every time she has been discussed here, but this time. Clearly, Meghan’s fashion choice was overlooked on purpose.

    9. Wow! I've not been around in a minute, at least to leave a comment, but along with everyone mostly I'm sure what she meant WMW. I think it very catty and unkind to just pounce and belittle someone who it seems to me was just asking about MMs outfit. There has been plenty of times Jane has commented.. I don't think she should blog about Megan if she doesn't want to. It would be nice though, if they are both at the same event, to know what Meghan wore as well.. I'm not a MM fan per say but I am interested in her fashion, especially when she is in proximity to the Queen of fashion, Kate! Thank you Jane for another outstanding article, I don't see how you have time for it really!?! It's almost a full time job, you're so busy yet so giving of your time! This is the ONLY blog I read regardless.. VG from the US.

    10. Anon @ 12:12 - yes previous posts have included info about Megans ensembles but those previous posts have also been longer and more detail-filled in general. Given her busy schedule at the moment I understand why Jane might not have wanted to spend the time tracking down all the extra info. Perhaps you might consider context before making insinuations.

    11. 6:48,

Your comment to me is rude. I was not rude at all.

A sentence or two giving her opinion about MM's outfit would have taken no time.

I stand by my remark that not mentioning MM's clothes was done on purpose.

      Cheers!

  2. I don't love this hat (never have) but I agree it works in the full-length shots to create balance. Otherwise I think I looks like someone shoved a lampshade on Kate's head. I adore that coat and wonder if she can tailor it to recycle post-pregnancy. And I look forward to more detail about the broach and earrings. My guess is they are from a Commonwealth country designer.

  3. I like Kate’s hat much better this time with her hair down.
I feel that Meghan’s collar looks s little off with the bright white lining showing. I loved Meghan’s navy dress underneath.

Covered today’s event nicely. It’s nice to see that Kate is reusing her maternity wear. I really liked that coat. I’d be interested to know about her jewelry, earrings and broach.

  6. Yaaaaaay, a brooch! I'm so happy to see one here because when she wears small little necklaces I often think that perhaps a brooch would work better and IT DOES. So glad she skipped a recycle of one of her regular matching sets of jewelry.

People seem to love or hate the hat but I come down on the 'love' side. It's classic with a twist and she looks great in it.

Bets on whether Kate somehow manages to recycle one of her previous St. Patricks Day pregnancy outfits? She's managed to wear quite a few things again, when she's a bit more pregnant than when she first wore them (with mixed results)...

    4. My only issue with Anne's outfit is that it looks as if the white has yellowed quite a bit with age. Maybe it was a cream-isn color all along but it didn't look that way to me.

  8. Catherine looked beautiful;I preferred this hat with this coat, rather than the little "percher" she wore before.
I much preferred Meghan's coat to the ones with the tied belt, though I diddn't care for the ribbon
    at her waist.
I loved the way the Duke and Duchess turned back to her on arrival. The long walk up the Abbey aisle must have been a bit nerve wracking, but she coped very well and should help for the shorter walk in St. George's.
Pat on the back for Meghan singing the National Anthem and the hymns.
I thought that today all the Royal ladies looked great.
Once again we saw how good the young Royals are with children.

  13. The Duchess looked impeccable and was absolutely glowing. How she is doing all of this so close to her delivery date is inspiring. She’s got grit that’s for certain! Yes, women have babes all the time, but (thankfully) they mustn’t all be photographed so endlessly. Oh and I adored her hat and brooch. The Queen is the ultimate example of accessorizing appropriately and I do hope the Duchess will find this confidence also. In regards to MM, she looked lovely today but I do so wish that she would hire a proper tailor. Someone to assist in better framing her petite figure could prove to be quite an asset. Everything mustn’t hang over your body, and a wee bit of tuck and polish will surely come with practice. Her hair was beautiful today and her skin is always so healthy and radiant. The beret was not my cup of tea however, as I didn’t care for the oddly placed nub on top. Perhaps a bow of floral embellishment would have been a softer accent? Overall I’d say it was a fashion win for all who attended. I do so love the buttoned up elegance of such events!

  15. I prefer this larger hat and Jane is so right about the balancing factor. Kate makes the 3rd trimester look very chic and elegant, does she not? Honestly, the thought of walking in those heels in Westminster Abbey, sans carpeting, would terrify me! :-)

    1. At first look I thought what was she doing with that huge hat?! But after Jane saying it balancing her out I thought again!! It seems extremely drafty on top of walking that whole way in very high heels, she has guts!! I'd be finding some of the Queen's flats! Is just me or is she way bigger this go around in this same outfit at the same "stage" of pregnancy at the same venue etc? I think she's due earlier which makes more sense than the month between her due date and their wedding!?! Or it's a boy.. VG from the US

She's carrying the baby way different leaving me to think it's a boy.. I was hoping for a girl for princess Charlotte's sake. And yes Zara looked past her due date!! Not trying to be mean but her outfit at ladies day was a hot air balloon disaster.

  17. Kate looked lovely. So elegant while pregnant. I was certainly never able to pull that off! Meghan looked appropriate - not a style I'm overly fond of on her - but more importantly, she and Harry look very happy together and I'm thrilled Harry no longer has to do these events "alone". Someone to share the position with - that's what he's wanted. To find someone he also loves and admires so deeply is a dream come true. But Kate and William - still so happy and in love. It's a joy to see. Thanks for the post Jane.

  18. Kate looked just lovely yesterday! One of my favorite hats on her. I am a fan of the big hats on her and hope she wears them more often as she continues to really embrace her roll as a senior royal. Her coat is just beautiful on her and I really want to see those earrings and that brooch up close!

Meghan seems to be shopping in Kate's shoe and purse closet. She usually wears shoes I wish Kate would wear and carries a cute handbag. Now it's suede pumps and clutch. Not a fan of the beret style hat but she's so petite a big hat would swallow her. I do like that she abandoned the tie at the waist coat.

    2. Another vote for big hats!!

    3. I like seeing Kate in larger hats too instead of always seeing smaller perchers. I also agree a larger hat does give some balance to her pregnant figure. What I mostly  don't like about this hat is the depth of the crown. The crown  of this hat is very deep and IMO with the brim style that contributes to the "bucket" or "lampshade" look some have mentioned. The crown is also much deeper than the original "Breakfast at Tiffany's" hat AH wore in the movie. (The overall  depth of the AH hat was shared by the brim, a deep brim that was also *wider* side to side than the brim of this hat. That brim also didn't seem to turn down as much at the edge as this one does.) All is all, the style elements of this hat--deep crown, turned down brim edge, relatively narrow brim from side to side-- make it look like it envelopes & swallows Kate's head a bit. A more shallow but still large hat wouldn't give that impression. (For example, the PT hat Kate rewore in 2017 to the Remembrance Sunday service.) Also, while they may not be Kate's style, hats HMTQ sometimes wears with very deep crowns but small brims don't seem to envelope the head so much. So while I like larger hats on Kate I'm not a big fan of this one.

  19. I agree Robin - Meghan has ditched the heavy belted coats and she looks fab - I seriously covet her Manolo Blahnik - they just have the right edge of true style. She is definitely finding her feet style wise on her journey to becoming a royal.

I just don't like this hat on Kate and I'm struggling to realise why - I think it's because it takes over face and darkens it too much entirely.

  20. Kate looks fabulous. I cannot get over her in those 4 inch heels at almost nine months pregnant! I love her more every time I see her out this late in her pregnancy.

Am I the only one who thinks Meghan's coat looks 4 sizes too big? Is that the way it's supposed to look? She was drowning in it! Otherwise very pretty though.

    1. They all look amazing! I’m still not a fan of Kate’s hat. It loks good by itself just not on a person I think. It just blocks her face too much.

I love Meghan’s outfit. I think she looked the best, but I do agree that he coat looked big but most of her clothing does. I think it is partially her look and partially her shedding for the wedding. Remember how thin Kate looked leading up to hers? I didn’t think it was ever possible for someone look so much thinner than Kate but she does and even at 9 months pregnant Kate looks amazingly small and healthy!

    5. The photo posted on KP site shows a view of the whole table. This photo is shown cropped to only show Kate's side of the table in some photos, leaving out the person she was looking at. That is not the view KP posted. In the full view, which is on the KP site,Catherine Quinn is to Kate's right. Kate appears to be engaged with the young man directly across from her. Several others are also focused on him. He is looking directly at Kate and she at him and I assume that means they are conversing. Ms.Quinn appears to be trying to hear the discussion he and Kate seem to be having.
I think Ms. Quinn may have had something to do with the recent inclusion on KP Twitter and the CC of less public meetings and activities. Kate has not been a self-promoter and I don't think KP has covered these events in the past. It amuses me that a few die-hard Kate detractors continue to discount the evidence of her behind the scenes work, even when confronted with the evidence. "Yes, she went to he meeting but her heart wasn't in it," etc. Others drag out the tired old "...but she's wearing a coat in her own home!" The inference somehow being that she is disinterested or just stopping in for a moment, according to some. The photo only shows her upper body. Sometimes she wears a light-weight coat as a top with slacks or a skirt, as I think she did at the last photographed meeting at KP. She also wore that sparkly coat as a top at a basketball game in NYC over slacks when she was pregnant. As far as the Kate coat issue, she may have walked outside briefly as a short cut to the meeting rooms in another apartment at KP. We don't know and making judgements about Kate's interest and involvement based on the wearing of a coat/jacket/top seems petty and superficial to me. These remarks have been non-issues on FBTB for the most part and I appreciate that.anon1

I also agree wholeheartedly regarding Kate not being a self promoter. 24. I love that last photograph Jane. The candid shots of the awesome foursome are the best aren't they? Only, that Kates's face is slightly shadowed by the hat. And maybe that is one reason why the jury is divided about this hat - from some angles Kate's face is significantly obscured. I remember reading that when Diana wore large hats, some sections of the press would complain that it prevented them from getting "the money shot".

WKHM were all beautifully turned out today - even the boys matched! My only disappointment was Kate's hair. Not that I didn't like the way it was styled, but that it hindered a good look at those elusive earrings...

  25. I’m always amazed at how wonderful Kate looks so far along in her pregnancies; she is so elegant. At the Commomwealth Service, the cut and color of the coat were perfect, I really liked the hat and agree with Jane that it added balance to the entire look. I loved how she and William turned to wait for Harry and Meghan, I’m sure it reassured Meghan a bit. Speaking of Meghan, I didn’t love the beret, but agree she’s so tiny and tends to be a minimalist in her fashion choices, so it suits her. I liked her coat better than some she’s been wearing, but it was still too big. She’s a beautiful woman and I think she is trying to find a way to keep her personal style within the constraints of the “royal rules”.
Looking forward to seeing Kate on St. Patrick’s Day.....then ugh! The wait! What will we do Jane? :-)

  26. A wonderful post as always Jane..thank you! I really enjoyed seeing the Duchess in that beautiful Beulah coat again but I thought the hat/hair combo left an awful lot to be desired. 27. Jane, enjoyable article as always. Kate’s outfit & color choice of navy blue so elegant. It is so refreshing the from lighter blue she tends to wear quite frequently. Megan’s out fit was nice..the coat was more flattering than the belted coats she has worn to previous events. The beret....was not the best choice....might be best for her to consult Kate on hat choices as Kate is a pro with hats. Also American rarely wear hats. A photo appeared on another site showing Kate at a meeting with the tennis group. She look lovely, however her expression was pretty solemn. Maybe it’s the new private secretary? Kate does not seem to have the smile or glow that she always had when Rebecca Deacon was at her side. Does anyone else ever notice ?

  30. Jessica-I replied to your comment a couple of days ago, but it vanished. I am a one-finger typer and sometimes my unused fingers have a mind of their own and do all kinds of mischief on my keyboard.

I wondered about the possibility of the brooch and earrings being passed on from a Middleton-her grandmother, for example. They may have gone to Carole initially and she has gifted them to Catherine. My Mom distributed some of her favorite things before she died to make sure the items went where they should.
Another possibility is Spencer jewelry, although I think the Earl's wife and his sisters may have most of that. However, Diana's mother surely had jewelry, possibly a few of the Spencer items she wore when married to Diana's father that ended up with Diana and then her sons, perhaps as a sentimental token.
The internet consensus (the small part I read) seems to be if it's not been seen on HM or Diana or listed as a gift, it is not from the royal jewels and therefore must be a modern set. I don't agree. There are also auctions of jewelry that has been sold out of the private collections of the RF.

Then, again, it could be costume jewelry from the last century. My Grandmother had several items that resembled the set, which I now have. We still don't know the origins of the red stone/ruby set she wore in Poland, I believe and once since. They may have a common source. anon1

  33. I think by keeping it close to KP she's probably working later into the pregnancy. She's got two previous pregnancies under her belt to know how her body handles labor and how far she can go without worry. I have a friend who went into labor with her fourth baby and knew she still had time to bake a pie for her husband's birthday before she left for the hospital. I don't think I'd ever be courageous enough to do that but I did work full time right up to two weeks before my due date.
