Kate is Late for Easter at Windsor (William, too ;))

Sunday, April 1, 2018

It happens to the best of us. This morning, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were late to the Easter morning service at St. George's Chapel, Windsor, turning up by chauffeured driven Bentley after the other royals and the Queen had arrived.

When the couple was absent from the usual line of royals walking to the chapel, it seemed they were skipping the annual gathering, but Emily Andrews shared Richard Palmer's video from Windsor and pointed out that the couple may have just hit traffic on their drive over from Bucklebury, where they are spending Easter with the Middletons.

Before the couple arrived, the royals lined up to greet the Queen--who is supposed to arrive last. Emily pointed out in this video that the Queen hesitated and looked around, seemingly questioning where William and Kate were. Awkward.

It was an Easter full of excitement for the Windsors, as Eugenie brought her fiancé Jack with her to the family event:

And someone on Twitter (maybe Gert?) pointed out that Lady Louise is wearing heels for the first time. This is not a detail I would know on my own, but she certainly is looking grown up and sophisticated. My recollection is that, at this age, Easter is such a fun day, because you get to dress up in a hat, and a fancy ensemble, and feel super glamorous. I know that's not the point of Easter, but when I was 14 that was a big component. ;)

I was particularly delighted to see Zara looking absolutely radiant as she is expecting a little one of her own, soon.

Kate chose to recycle the brown Catherine Walker she wore to St. Patrick's Day while pregnant with Princess Charlotte. I am honestly surprised this still fits Kate, but she looks fantastic in it. I love the choice of the Praline accessories. Kate is carrying her Loeffler-Randall clutch and wearing her Praline pumps by Gianvito Rossi. The Betty Boop hat is, of course, an old favorite, and Kate finished the look off with her faux pearl set from Balenciaga.

Last year, there was a shift in William and Kate's duties. They kicked into new gear and took another step in a continuum of increasing seniority. I think that included starting to attend Easter at Windsor, and I was not surprised to see them on hand this morning. I loved this ensemble on Kate. It fit her well and really flattered her--she looked so tiny! The accessories were the perfect color to lighten the look, too. Big success all around!

Don't forget to place your bet on Baby Cambridge's birthday. April 10th looks pretty popular, and April 21st is way out in front. As I mention in the intro, the 18th is not the due date, it is just the random number I had to choose for the program.

A blessed and Happy Easter to you all and to your families.

    2. Haven't seen the half up style in a while. Thinking that's because the hair was too short. Happy it's longer now.

  3. They obviously didn't start the service until William and Catherine arrived, as the Chaplain greeted them at the door of the Chapel.
The Duchess looked lovely. She doesn't appear to have put on any weight except for the baby.

  4. I think it is irresponsible to commend "tinyness" as a goal in a woman who is heavily pregnant. She doesn't need that kind of compliment and it jars given her experience with hyperemesis.

If that was a dig aimed at me, it was an observation only--neither a commendation nor a criticism.

    3. No, I was referring to the blog post, specifically this "I loved this ensemble on Kate. It fit [sic] her well and really flattered her--she looked so tiny." I've had hyperemesis through two pregnancies and used to find the comments about how slim I had managed to stay quite distressing. Pregnancy is such a challenging time that it doesn't feel appropriate to me to comment on physique, however subtle. But tbh I prefer to leave comments about women's physique out entirely and focus on the fashion and the fun!

    4. I wasn't a huge fan of this comment either. How much weight you put on/how you carry depends on genetics, your frame and height, sex of your baby, how many children you've had, etc etc etc. The goal should be a healthy pregnancy, not looking tiny. I'm sure Jane didn't mean it the way it sounded, but I hope it's not repeated.

Good to see Peter and Autumn looking happy. Anyone else hear the rumor that he had a cozy dinner with a brunette? Seems like it was nothing.

    5. Was Zara’s husband there?

    6. I don't think the "tiny" comment is meant to set any expectations of pregnant women. It's just a fair assessment that the outfit made her look small.

  5. Kate looks very nice and polished but it doesn't seem to be a very Easter-like outfit to me. Head to toe shades of brown? Outside of a total black or very dark grey outfit, I can't think of a color I'd be less inclined to wear to Easter services :) I guess maybe no other coat still fit or looked right if worn open. On the other hand, Kate and I often don't seem to have the same "sense of the seasons" re: colors and styles of outfits. She's worn a number of things I thought looked nice but seemed odd to wear at the time of the year she wore them.

These pictures do seem to confirm Anon 1 the outfit isn't dark olive green :)

  7. I'm not loving brown for Easter as I always thing pretty spring colors should shine then. But, at closing in on nine months of pregnancy she gets a pass. Love the pearls and she looks great! Biggest win today, for me, is Zara. She looks beautiful in that pretty blue and she looks so happy. Lady Louise looks so grown up! Eugenie also looks very happy. Lovely all around.

    1. Agreed RobinfromCA, at this stage in her pregnancy, Kate could show up in her pajamas and still get a pass as far as I'm concerned. It's a total win for me, and she just looks fresh and gorgeous. I have no clue how she's managed to steadily become more beautiful than she already is throughout the pregnancy. She never looks 'off.'

  8. Am I the only one who noticed that Beatrice didn't curtsy to her grandmother? Even Zara, as pregnant as she is, managed to dip a fairly deep curtsy. What's up with that, Bea?

    1. Anne did not curtesy either and her husband did not bow. Most likely all three of them had already greeted the Queen earlier in the day.

    2. Apparently family members only curtsey to the queen the first time they are seeing her that day. It seems Bea saw granny at the "house" before the service:)

I mention this below on a diff comment but just in case, figured I'd post it here too- you only have to curtsy to queen the first time you see her so I'm assuming Beatrice def saw her grandmother earlier that day already. It's actually not uncommon to see at royal events some of the women curtsy in and some not, & is a cool way to get some idea of what they were doing earlier in the day before doing event in question.

      Delete
    4. That caught my eye too, I need to go back and re watch!

      Delete
    5. You only need to curtsy to HM once a day - so obviously Bea had already met her grandma earlier in the morning.

      Delete
    6. She could have seen her before church? They only have to curtsy/bow the first time they've seen her that day, don't they?

      Delete
    7. I can only assume she must have seen her grandmother earlier in the day...? The protocol is curtsying the first time you see the Queen, right?

  9. While it is nice to see William and Catherine join the Royal Family for Easter service, it is very bad form to arrive after the Queen. It is hard to imagine how this could have happened and no doubt Her Majesty was not pleased. The optics of this are concerning and they really should make a stronger effort to be front and centre at such occasions as the future Monarch and his consort. This situation makes it appear as though they dashed to Windsor for the church service and dashed out afterwards as opposed to spending quality time with the Queen and their extended family. We will never know what actually occurred, however, this isn't the image that bodes well for a couple who seem to be making recent efforts to be viewed as working harder and taking their duties as senior members of the family more seriously.

    1. There could be many reasons why they were late and I cannot imagine HM was not aware of it beforehand. Since they've never been disrespectful of HM in any way I am sure there was communication in advance. Beatrice not curtsying is a much bigger issue for me. Andrew walking on the street instead of next to Zara and then leaving her in the dust as they were walking is also classless. Then he was nowhere around when HM arrived.

      Delete
    2. Since they curtsy when it’s the first time they see the Queen, it’s likely she saw or was with the Queen earlier and therefore did not curtsy in the video. You are giving William and Kate the benefit of doubt in not disrespecting the Queen, so why is Beatrice not also given that benefit?

      Delete
    3. Bear in mind not curtseying can mean Bea saw HM earlier. Protocol only requires the curtsey upon first meeting that day. Anne didn’t curseyneither. I would guess for same reason as Bea. I didn’t see Andrew upon arrival. I hope that what you saw wasn’t intentional.

    4. William and Kate are late due to trafic. HM is curtsy one time. So,is likely that Zara and Beatice saw the Queem before that they arraived.

      Delete
    5. Maybe Bea had already seen HM that day. Don't family members curtsy just the first time they see her?

    6. Maggie - MinneapolisApril 1, 2018 at 11:22 PM

RobinfromCA- you only curtsy the first time you see the queen that day, so unless you know for a fact that Beatrice did not see HM earlier, I don't see why it's disrespectful that she didn't curtsy.

      Delete
    7. Perhaps Beatrice spent time with HM earlier and did not need to curtsy to her later the same day.

Also Anon 8:17-i do agree it was disrespectful. But I don't get what it has to do with if they seem like they're working harder/more as royals or w/e. This could have happened in their first yr of marriage and I dk, I at least can't imagine thinking it was okay (if happening then) bc they weren't full time royals yet or something lol. This isn't about how much work you do, it's about doing the commitments you do make in proper manner. That all being said, I should clarify-like I said, I thought it was disrespectful, but kate is 9 months pregnant & it's possible she was waiting out some Braxton hicks or maybe they left an hour early to be safe & just happened to get caught in awful traffic no one could possibly have predicted (or be expected to preemptively avoid by leaving even earlier) -caused by a huge car crash or something. Ofc also possible they left late for reasons that they didn't have to be late for, or heck if they left on time but not with buffer time in case of the unexpected, that'd be bad too. But like we should be reasonable abt buffer expectations, and more importantly we don't know what happened so it's possible it was on purpose (bc of the contractions) or even after doing their best to avoid unexpected delays causing this, and that only seems fair to acknowledge. If it was more their fault, then definitely unacceptable, but mistakes happen so unless they keep having this problem, it'll be okay in my book.

Btw why is it that ppl often respond to criticism of Kate by attacking other royals? Makes me sad.

    9. Her Majesty is also a grandmother, and she has been pregnant 4 times herself. I don't think she is at all an unkind person and would no way have had a cow about these two being tardy. I didn't see the other things, so I can't comment, but maybe it's just more relaxed there now. (Has anyone heard anything about Prince Philip??) Kate is beautiful! As always! What a great year for them all with the weddings and two babies coming into the world!

    10. They were late. It is not done to enter after the Queen. But let's not start to be all judgemental about it. It is the one and only time in 7 years it has happened. It made me appreciate all the times they were beautifully on time, perfectly dressed for the occasion, no matter from where they were coming from and how long the journey.
One thing I am sure is that HM never uses the expression quality time!

      Delete
    11. The obvious reason is Beatrice had already met The Queen that morning. Thus no need to curtsy again. This is the normal way of doing it, everyone curtsies/bows only once, the moment they meet HM for the first time that day.

      Delete
    12. For the record HM sent a car to pick them up and bring them to Windsor. I am sure they were on time and hit traffic.

  10. Beatrice wouldn't have curtsied to the Queen outside the church if she had already done so earlier in the day...which means she saw HM some time during the morning before the church service.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I read somewhere earlier today that the royals will only curtsy the first time they see the queen. So perhaps Beatrice spent breakfast with the her grandparents. Therefore she had already curtsied and didn't have to now. Hope I'm explaining this correctly so that it makes sense.

  14. My understanding is that you only have to curtsy the first time seeing the Queen that day..so Beatrice must have spent time with the Queen before arriving at church.

  16. Catherine and William arriving late and departing in their own car afterwards without joining the rest of the family is the story here, not that well-cut but dreary brown coat Catherine was wearing. It is simply bad manners and it puts the Cambridges in a very bad light. Regardless of the reason for their tardiness, the optics of this situation - given who William and Catherine are in terms of seniority in the royal family and the importance of Easter Sunday (in religious terms) to the Monarch (head of the church)- it is a public relations blunder.

  18. My favorite outfit got a repeat- finally!! I just love the cut of this coatdress on Kate- I think it flatters her beautifully in this last stage of pregnancy. As Kate grows more in seniority, I think she will wear more Catherine Walker. I loved seeing the family today. Everyone looked blooming lovely. What a nice surprise! It looks chillier in Windsor this year (we had snow today in Indiana) than last year. I think the light pink McQueen or Jenny Packham would've been too lightweight to wear for her. Baby Cambridge is coming soon!!! Yay!

  20. I can't get over how judgemental some of you are! Have those of you who criticised The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for having been late never been late for anything yourselves? I suspect that they themselves were embarrassed that they arrived late, but I also suspect that it would have been due to traffic. For example, there could have been an accident. I imagine they apologised to The Queen, who would have understood completely. I doubt that they were simply lolling about at Bucklebury and forgot the time.

  23. I think the Queen call the timing. If they were two minutes late all of the security people were aware of the timing and they all decided together to go ahead and move forward with the Queen arriving first. WhAt we see as a faux pas that is accidental is very controlled in their situation. The Queen or her security people would have made the decision to go ahead. I doubt the Cambridge’s were late because they had no idea of the time.
