Prince William Brings Charlotte and George to the Lindo Wing

Monday, April 23, 2018

What a morning! As he did when Charlotte was born, the Duke Cambridge left the Lindo Wing this afternoon by the front door. Waving to photographers, he popped in a waiting Range Rover to zip back to KP to pick up George and Charlotte for a visit to their mother and new brother.

He returned shortly with the little ones. Not too much has changed since we saw these two last. George is still a little more reserved, and Charlotte is happy as a clam to interact with the press:

James Whatling captured this precious moment as Charlotte turned for a smile for the photographers. She is a natural. Apparently, the press was calling "Turn, turn!" and only Charlotte did so. I have to say, I am a huge fan of William, but it takes patience sometimes when he bungles obvious big moments like this one. Well, now the history books will have the spotlight on Charlotte for this moment.

This is a classic case of women understanding what's necessary at the proper moment. ;) Charlotte's half turn and final wave absolutely made this arrival.

I am not great at seeing these little details, but Christin Zi pointed out that once inside, Charlotte tries to take George's hand, and he puts his arm around her shoulder. I think Kate is intentionally raising her children to be very close to each other, which is so, so lovely.

The Palace has announced Kate will leave the hospital today. Sunset is around 8pm London time, so we are looking at a departure in the next few hours. Update: Richard Palmer says the next 15 minutes to half hour!

  1. Love your blog Jane, but I respectfully disagree that William "bungled" the moment walking up the stairs. Rather, I think he ACED being a Dad first. I always look at pics of the Cambridges with their kids and wonder how my own, 3 and 1 yo, would react. The 1 yo would be a total ham and the 3 yo would hate having to face the media and crowds, just like Charlotte and George. It's just their personalities. I think he was focused on supporting George rather than creating a perfect photo op. Kudos to him as a Dad for that!

I so agree with you, Kelly! Kids come first! He brought them, he smiled, everyone got their cute shots, enough. No need to traumatize the children.

    3. Yes,in agreement as well. William was beaming. The noise from the photographers was very loud. William did his best to prompt a wave from George, though the noise and camera flashes seemed to overwhelm him. I think William knows his son and made the entrance as less stressful for George as possible. I think the nanny and parents have encouraged beautiful manners and kindness in the children, that small glimpse of affection between the children was precious. Congratulations Kate and William, the baby boy is gorgeous.

  2. How did William bungle this?! He brought his children to see their mother and new sibling - the car was parked far enough away for plenty of photo opps without the little things having to pose. He has been there and knows exactly what he is doing. Good for him.

  4. The photo of Charlotte climbing the steps and looking back over her shoulder has to be my favorite photo of her so far! Perfect capture, James Whatling!

    1. For me it is a toss up between this photo and the one of her smelling her bouquet. Although I have to say that every photo I have seen of her has been 100% cuteness.

    2. Anon 5:45, I love that photo of Charlotte smelling her bouquet! That's a close second for me. So many lovely photos of her. So adorable.

  5. I agree with the other commentators- William did a wonderful job! I wouldn’t call this a blunder at all. You can sense from this video how hesitant George is and William is being very sensitive to the rhythms of his son which is more important then getting a posed photo op for the press. The children were so much looking forward to seeing their mum and little brother!

  6. i must also disagree that Prince William bungled the moment when he was bringing his children in to see their mother and new brother. It was a sweet and natural response from Princess Charlotte. It went extremely well and I must say Prince William handled it very well.
