Trooping the Colour 2018: Kate & Meghan Make Balcony Debut Together

Saturday, June 9, 2018

Trooping the Colour is a fan favorite for good reason. All our favorite royals (even those on maternity leave!) come out in their finest to enjoy England's summer sunshine, a bright and bubbling London, and celebrate Her Majesty the Queen.

For Kate fans, the festivities got started this morning when the parade of carriages from the Horse Guards made its way up the Mall carrying the waving royals. As usual, Kate joined Camilla in a carriage, since Prince William rides a horse for Trooping.

William always looks quite regal in his bearskin hat, albeit sweltering.

The newly minted Duke of Sussex got his own carriage this year as he debuted his bride at this annual parade.

Meghan went with a soft pink ensemble, which turned out to be a bespoke Carolina Herrera. She paired it with a Philip Treacy hat, and I still think this is a recycle of the hat she wore to the Buckingham Palace garden party, but I can't say I have investigated closely. If you follow Meghan closely and can confirm, comment below!

The adult members of the BRF take to the balcony at the end of parade before the rest of the royals (like William) join them with the kids. Back when George or Charlotte needed to be held more, it was always nice to get the earlier shot for fashion's sake.

This year was no exception as Kate, Meghan, and Harry mingled on the balcony and we got a glimpse at the ladies' clutches. Kate looks to be carrying a McQueen to match her dress, and Meghan paired her designer, too, carrying a Carolina Herrera clutch.

Little Louis didn't make the cut for Trooping (we never expected him to make an appearance), but both George and Charlotte are old enough to stand on their own,  so it was a new dynamic this year as both children enjoying the balcony along with their second-cousins Savannah and Isla Phillips.

Charlotte is quite the little character. I don't know what momentarily displeased her, but she certainly doesn't keep anyone guessing about her state of mind.

With some gentle encouragement from Savannah, Kate had Charlotte calmed quickly and back with her buddies enjoying the excitement.

Let's chat fashion. This custom McQueen was picture perfect in my book. It was simple with little fuss, so it flattered Kate's still recovering figure, but the peaked shoulders added a regal flare that took it from a plain-jane dress to an occasion piece. Something about the pleating along those peaks made me think of Cinderella, too. It was quite a princess-y look. Her Kiki McDonough blue topaz drops and Eden topaz necklace added the necessary sparkle.

The new hat has me pleased as punch. Kate has been wearing very simple silhouettes by Jane Taylor for a few years now, and with huge success in my book. These are just four examples of the oval shape and the pointed base that Kate has favored.

But in the past year or so she has moved toward busier bases with lots happening under the brim. I like this progression. I love the fleet of Jane Taylors she was wearing, but I was ready for these more assertive hats, too. Disc hats generally deliver in the flare department, and although she isn't going all out to the size/scope that she could (e.g. Meghan's hat today, or the Philip Treacy Kate wore to Trooping in 2016), this hat is a continuation of her chapeaux's shifting gears.

The only thing I don't love about today's hat is the twist of knotted silk under the brim. This isn't the first time Kate has had an embellishment like this. One notable example is her Gina Foster hat for Zara Tindall's wedding, which had a similar twist under the brim. While certainly bringing the disc-hat wow factor, it looked a little dried out to me.

I would prefer just a collection of flowers, similar to her Philip Treacy for Trooping in 2016, or at least a hat that featured a design heavier on the flowers and light on the silk tie. That would be a little fresher and younger looking.

Today was a wonderful Trooping. Kate looked magnificent, as I expected her to, and it was fun to see the family grow with the addition of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as their own unit.

Happy Official Birthday to the Queen!

  1. I think Kate and Meghan's outfits are perfection. I like Charlotte's as well, although it is somewhat predictable in the way it always matches Kate's color. I would love to see George in something more masculine, perhaps like his dad. On another note, I might be reading too much into it, but I wonder if there's a security reason why George is kneeling.

    3. Predictable or traditional...in the eye of the beholder, I think. I definitely think the unpredictable red bow in Charlotte's hair was the little Princess's whimsy. I wish I could briefly fast-forward twenty years and have a look at how her style evolves. I suspect Aunt Meghan will look bland in comparison. Throw in Mia and who knows what the balcony will look like then? ;+)

    4. I hope it's ok to say I'm not sure why "Aunt Megan" features in the comment about Charlotte. I think that William and Kate are not in a hurry for a bigger spotlight on Charlotte any time really and attention Megan draws away from Charlotte or (Katherine really) as a principal fashion plate would be a relief for them.
I think Katherine has the upper hand in terms of understanding the feeling of dressing for balcony events because she is British and had a childhood of watching these things from afar. In terms of negative comments it seems the other ladies are more covered up at this event but the RF seem to warmly welcome Megan and always seem encouraging in public so far.

What a lovely photo Jane choose of the Queen smiling at her guys.

Sophie Wessex wore a much lower cut dress in 2011 than Meghan wore today. Meghan's outfit is a little different but not scandalous or inappropriate.

Charlotte's dress matches mom and her red bow matches dad!

    6. Good point Grtlk. I suspect that is true today and will be true for a long time. In 20 yrs Charlotte will be 23. And as I recall, at 23 Will and Harry both still wanted to live fairly private lives. Could be one of those "be careful what you wish for" situations so far as less attention on Meghan goes!

I thought Meghan looked nice today. She's obviously less covered up than others but I don't see that as a problem myself & think the color was pretty on her. And while I'm sure to be in the minority as I often am, I really liked the jacket button placement. Better IMO than the super-awkward spots where CH usually puts them!

    7. Yes, that was a very poor choice Sophie made in 2011. I recall it was lower cut, and probably appeared even more so because it was too big and ill-fitting. Meghan’s dress this year at least fit her well; slooked very good in it. But something less revealing would have been more appropriate for this occasion.

    8. 5:22--initial comment in this thread starts with:" I think Kate and Meghan's outfits are perfection." That's how "Aunt Megan" (sic.) fits in this thread. I am assuming both she and Charlotte will be around twenty years from now.
I was only trying to put a light-hearted spin on this discussion and the thought of how grown-up Charlotte will attire herself intrigued me.
No need for snide, disparaging comments.

  2. I agree, Kate looked like Cinderella! Loved the color and style of her dress. Her hat was not my favorite as I feel it looked a bit aged for my palate. I also agree that less of the silk ties and more focus on the florals would have made it look better! A simple hat is the perfect statement. The earrings were gorgeous! I’d say she nearly nailed it.

Meghan’s dress was a bit showy for this occasion, in my eyes. I did love the color dress on her skin; it made her glow. This hat looks like a recycle to me which is totally fine because I LOVED it the first time it was worn! I love that she has such a young sense of style, but I feel she may need to be a bit more toned down on the sexy-side for certain events.

    Love them both!

    1. Kate looked beautiful and regal; she’s a total pro at this now. I agree that Meghan’s dress was a very flattering color and cut for her, she looked beautiful in it. Unfortunately, bare shoulders were really not the most appropriate choice for this occasion.

And as it happens I feel that the bar for “appropriate” for this event sits much higher than a thong and nipple rings :-)

    5. This is a fashion blog. We can discuss if we like a choice or not and if the choice was appropriate for the venue. Thongs would be inappropriate in any venue. As a test of appropriate attire, one should have another reference IMO. Meghan was not inappropriate in the moral, prudish sense. She just did not wear the attire that was expected for the occasion, IMO.

  4. Always fun to watch trooping. Normally the family stay on the balcony to watch the Queen arrive back to the palace, but since Field Marshal Guthrie had a fainting spell and fell from his horse they went back inside early. Kate looked great...as did Meghan. Meghan's hat looks like the same from the garden party but possibly reformed as the brim was perked upwards today and not down like at the garden party. Plus the dome has a slightly differnt shape. Great post, Jane!

    1. Because the kids are out front so she's watching them

    2. That position, combined with the placement of Catherine with Camilla , side-by-side in a carriage, leaves no doubt that HM still puts the succession first for public events. I thought Kate would ride with H&M.
Kate was not out front just to supervise the children. Otherwise, Autumn could have stood behind the children, half of whom were hers.

    3. okay but i remember a few years ago when everyone on the blog threw a conniption fit when kate stood in the back because someone else's child was in the front. everyone said her rank should have had her in the front and if that's the reasoning, charles and camilla should be in front of her.

Charles stood next to the Queen for a lot of the balcony appearance, Camilla was behind the Queen next to Meghan.

      Delete
    5. The mention of balcony positioning brings up an interesting point. When the royals came back out onto the balcony Camilla entered before Charles and she hung back, as though somewhat uncertain where to stand. By the time Charles came along, the front row was filled in. Some film/video stops at the moment Charles comes in, but it is obvious from his positioning slightly sideways and the subsequent need for William to step sideways and behind Kate, furthering the domino effect with one Taylor girl having to reposition herself as well.
As usual, musical chairs with Charles jockeying for prime spot next to HM. I think it was especially kind of Camilla to remain behind with Meghan.
I was so glad to see so many of the family included. I wish I knew who they all were. There was one woman on the far let in a cream outfit that reminded me of some of Kate's previous McQueen outfits. Odd seeing the Duke of Kent in back with the Duchess up front. Andrew still looks dashing in a uniform. Bitter sweet seeing him take his Father's role today, although the DofE has not ridden in quite some time with this event. I think maybe the Queen was a bit melancholy at first, riding in the carriage without her Prince.

I think the Queen, C&C, W&K, H&M and C&G should be front and center then the rest of the family fill in the space. I watched a video showing the other kids pushing to get up front. William had to push is way around a few of the kids. He had a hard time getting to his wife and son. Where were these kids parents

It was nice that Camilla stood behind Charles to be with Meghan. There was space up front next to Andrew where Camilla could had stood. Those children should have been with their parents, not pushing to be up front. William had a hard time getting behind George.

    9. All of the jockeying for position on the balcony sort of lends itself to Charles desire to pare down the number of people officially representing the monarchy. It is important for the heirs to be seen by the people and I think the queen would not have tolerated todays circus in years past. It was only a few years ago that she told William to stand up!

  8. Absolutely love Kate’s outfit and she looks amazing for 6 weeks postpartum. Hat was a little fussy as was the matching Kiki necklace but she is never not the picture of elegance and grace. I really love Meghan’s outfit too, she’s stunning and her hair down covers up some of her exposed shoulders. I’m just happy to see something more tailored on her with polished, glossy hair instead of baggy clothes and messy buns. Meghan has also been pulling out ALL the stops with some blingy Birks jewelry over the past few months, two diamond rings on her right hand today. She looks very tan—an indication that they honeymoooned somewhere warm and not Canada as everyone seems to think. I just wish they had been on the other side of the Cambridges instead of those two young women I’ve never seen (actually, a lot of principal BRF seemed to be shoved in with little known members of the extended family?). Poor Harry has always been on the back row for this event. Savannah was a hoot, though she stuck out in the middle of the Cambridge clan. Charlotte took a tumble off of the stool (scary!!) which is why she cried. Always a favorite event!

I love the color of Meghan's dress and I do agree that the hat is a recycle. She's going to need time to build her hat collection. I have to agree with 10:39 above that the dress was slightly inappropriate for the occasion. The bare shoulders glared at me right off. They are better left for an evening event.

  12. The Duchess of Cambridge looks magnificent, truly majestic. Love, love, love the neckline & the hat, especially. I really couldn't unglue my eyes from her this morning, she was resplendent. And The Duchess of Cornwall, as always, rocking it in her own way.

Can I also say....the HRH the Duke of Cambridge has been looking so good lately!. I think it's those RayBans and the sportier jacket he wore earlier this week (or was it last week?). Honestly, he could do so much more for himself by being willing to work with a fashion consultant. (I'd like to think his wife has encouraged him to do so, but that, after repeating herself ad nauseam, she dropped the issue because "one must pick one's battles." Ha!). Amazing how we "imagine" their relationship and god only knows what they're really like behind closed doors. Anyhow, what a wonderful Trooping the Color.

It might seem like an imprudent question and if so, apologies. A while back you mentioned you might write a piece about the Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex and the ways in which they will complement & enhance each other's roles and personalities but also in the ways their personas might produce some tensions for one another (obviously not in ranking....the ultimate deciding factor). Wondering if you're still thinking about sharing your thoughts in that department. (It's clear those two are super friendly and the DoS looked beautiful as well, very royal but definitely with an American pizzazz and her penchant for index finger rings transferred into royal style).

    1. The two young women are Estella and Eloise Taylor, teenage daughters of Lady Helen Taylor. Helen, the girls’ mother, is the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Kent and William’s cousin, I believe. The young sisters are very close in age--only 21 months apart--and although publications like the Daily Mail are always mixing the two up, I believe that Estella (the younger but taller sister) is in beige and Eloise is wearing a green dress.

    4. Lady Helen Taylor is the Duke of Kent's daughter. The Duke is the Queens first cousin - her father and prince George , Duke of Kent were brothers. So Lady Helen Taylor (born 1964) and Prince Charles (1948) are second cousins despite their large age gap, and Prince William (1982) and Lady Eloise (2003) and Lady Estella (2004) are 3rd cousins. Eloise and Estella have two older brothers Columbus and Cassius (oh my word the names) who might have been on the balcony or not. They were not the boys in sailor suits though, haha - they are in their 20's.

  14. I'm really curious as to when someone from Buckingham Palace is going to sit Meghan down and explain when her arms need to be covered. First a memorial at a church (I believe St. Paul's) when she was wearing a sleeveless dress, now this outfit. Really not appropriate. The women are supposed to have their arms covered at least to the elbow.

I don't know, maybe she's just rebelling, but it really seems like she's never had the general rules explained to her.

Loved Kate's outfit - definitely Cinderella-esque, but in a really elegant way. Had no problem with the hat either.

    1. Can you point me in the direction of this firm "rule" ? I am sure that if someone was upset abut her showing her arms they would say so.

      ...and it was St Martins-In-The-Field.

I will never understand the prudery surrounding arms and collar bones. I will also never understand the continual sniping at the Duchess of Sussex as she finds her way in this new job.

    2. I also couldn’t find anything about a rule that British Royal women must wear sleeves down to their elbows. Meghan looked very classy and ladylike. Kate dresses much more conservatively- that’s her style and that’s fine, but that doesn’t mean that Meghan must also dress in that same style.

      Delete
    3. I've never seen a "dress code" for the Trooping spelled out as there is for the Ascot. If one exists listing specifics such as the required lengths for sleeves (?!) I'd love to see it. I do remember at least one of the York sisters once wore a sleeveless outfit to the Trooping.

The rules for church attire seem much looser than they used to be to me. Some female guests wore sleeveless dresses to H&M's church wedding and a few months after marrying, Kate herself wore to a church wedding a B&W sheath dress that had such tiny "flutter" cap sleeves it might as well have been sleeveless.I thought it looked fine but I also thought Meghan's sleeveless dress looked fine.

While I understand people may not like the outfit choices Meghan has made, personally I can't imagine she has deliberately ignored *explicit* rules she's been given when making those choices. She may have violated some implicit "everybody in UK society knows X" ideas though. And unfortunately often those ideas become rules only after the fact.

I think it is out of respect for the Queen. Meghan seems to do what she wants. Hope someone will sit her down and explain the do’s and don’ts of the “dress code”. Harry might love the way his wife dresses but there is a time and place for dresses like the one she wore Saturday.
I sure hope she dresses a lot better on her day out with the Queen coming up.

    8. I doubt the BRF is going to publish its guidelines for us to peruse ; ) . I do know, however, that the Queen has mentioned how you dress for engagements has to do with respect for the people you interact with (or something to that effect).

I think you can quite clearly tell on the balcony that Meghan's figured out she should've picked a different dress. She looked extremely nervous and uncomfortable. And I don't dislike her, I'm just a bit skeptical of an actress/aspiring-activist presented with the "role of a lifetime" and a quick marriage to someone she'd only ever been in a long-distance relationship with. Time will tell.

How she dresses for her upcoming engagements with HM will tell us a lot as well.

      Delete
    9. The way one dresses should be respectful to the hostess. In this case the hostess is the queen and Meghan missed the mark. I do not like that she seems to be a bit rebellious and pushes the envelope at every opportunity. While some may like that she does this it is not showing respect for the family and the institution which she seemed so eager to join. Now that the wedding is over it seems she's not excited about being being in the back row. Her aspirations to be a global feminist activist would have done better in a far less traditional institution. As Am said, time will tell.

      Delete
    10. I think it would be a true kindness for someone to sit down with Meghan and explain the unwritten norms for dressing and life in general in The Firm. She'll figure it out herself eventually, but wouldn't it be nice if someone would just help her out?
I know when I took my current job, in a very different culture from what I was used to, I was very grateful for the "heads-up" I received from a new colleague.

The romantic in me hopes the Harry-Meghan relationship is truely love at first sight.

Catherine is my younger self how to be classy goals. I love her, just love her. I'm old enough to be her mother, but I love her look most of the time.

      Delete
    11. I wish some people came and commented on how someone needs to sit down with the future consort and gives a lecture on royal dressing back then because frankly Kate has shown us much more than her shoulders and not just once but multiple times.

Also I don't think Meghan looked nervous because she realised what a big mistake she made according to some, wearing an off the shoulder dress, she looked as tense at Christmas when she had to bow too. I suppose she is learning and she wants to do it right. You read way too much into things.

And I always have a laugh at people because two things they never fail to mention about Meghan, her skin colour and being an actress. WOW!

      Delete
    12. Do people really think that Meghan was allowed to pick out her own outfit without any oversight from her advisors? Honestly. This was her first official appearance with the Queen. People will craft any narrative to suit their prejudice against the new Duchess. I’m sure that Meghan consulted the appropriate parties when picking her outfit, but heaven forbid we see her clavicle! I dare say some of you may be more conservative than the monarch herself.

      Delete
    13. Anon 1:44, I agree that Meghan didn't look nervous because of her outfit. However, nobody mentioned her skin color except you.

Joanna, Even Kate doesn't have someone who tells her what to wear on these occasions. If anyone in the family had someone telling them what to wear we wouldn't see such vast differences in the fashions and some of the past mistakes would not have been made.

It is a confusion that people cannot dislike a choice Meghan makes without being accused of being prejudiced. I come here to follow Kate but I certainly don't think every sartorial choice she makes is a good one. I've never been accused being prejudiced because of that. It seems some are dissecting every single word said about Meghan looking for a reason to be offended. It's pretty pathetic.

  16. Thank you Jane for covering both ladies! :) I really liked the colors that they were both wearing and I really liked the hat Kate was wearing and the tailoring of Meghan's outfit. Now to my concerns. I didn't care for the sleeves on Kate's dress. I thought that it didn't quite go with the other elements of the dress, like the really flattering tailoring in the bodice and the pleated skirt.
For Meghan, at first I thought that the outfit was a inappropriate, but then I reminded myself, that for years I have seen Trooping pictures through the prism of Kate's sartorial choices. Meghan is a Duchess in her own rite now and shouldn't be deemed appropriate/inappropriate in her dress because we are so used to seeing the more conservative Kate. While I think the depth of the cut was a tad too low, I thought it a good look for her and it looked lovely from the balcony.

    1. Not just a more conservative Kate's choices...also, the Queen, Camilla, Autumn, Anne, Princess Alexandra, the Duchess of Kent and in her day, Diana. Even, usually, Beatrice, Eugenie and Zara dress relatively conservatively for Trooping. The fact that "one of the York sisters" once wore and has not since worn a sleeveless outfit to Trooping begs the question--why no repeated sleeveless York occurrence? One of the York sisters also once wore a huge pretzel hat to a church wedding. No repeats there, either. In fact, her recent hats have been modest indeed.
There is obviously a traditional rule of attire that one breaks once and not again.

    2. I'd hardly say the Yorks now wear only "conservative" hats simply because we haven't seen a "pretzel hat" repeat anon1! For example, I'd not think a hat bearing "Love" embroidered in metallic script is exactly British-sensibility "conservative" (although I thought it was cute.) I do remember media stories for several years after 2011 saying the Queen thought Kate's skirts were too short. (Sometimes I thought so too when she was photographed sitting trying to tug her skirt down or cover her thighs with her hands and clutch bag.) But in years past when the skirt-length issue came up on the blog, people couldn't agree on what the "rules" for royal women actually required except trousers could not be worn for royal events, that is, until suddenly they could be, jeggings included.

I seriously doubt Meghan broke a rule and seriously doubt there IS an official rule about sleeves having to be at least elbow length. But if during her away day with HMTQ this week Meghan doesn't wear an off-the-shoulder dress, I suppose that will be taken as "proof" she was smacked down!

I understand not liking all of Meghan's clothing choices. Of course that's fine. I haven't liked them all just as I haven't liked all of Kate's choices. What I don't understand though is the apparent level of hostility towards Meghan as a person a mere three weeks after the wedding. (I'm referring to general hostility, not only what has been said here in the Trooping comments.) We all know what one main reason is said to be although I hope that's not true. But I don't know what IS fueling the hostility. Is it just that she's different from W&H's other girlfriends in that she's not a 20-something "English rose?" Because she's not currently dressing or behaving as a Kate mini-me? And didn't before marrying Harry? (How boring if they did dress alike!) Because divorce is still an unforgivable sin even though more than 40% of UK opposite-sex couples divorce? As did W&H's parents? Because people half-expected & maybe secretly hoped Harry would remain 1 of the 3 musketeers with W&K forever? Or is it that when two attractive women essentially the same age working for the same "firm" are discussed there has to be a winner & a loser? That everything in life has to be a zero-sum game? Even though in the case of these two women the order of succession has already defined different royal roles and different destinies for them? I really don't get it.

    3. Lizzie, it's the 21st century, I don't think you need to immediately accuse everyone of being racist. I don't know anyone who cares what color Meghan's skin is.

I'm skeptical of an actress marrying a prince she claimed to know nothing about (despite being a self-declared Anglophile and having Diana's biography in her bookshelf) after only a long-distance relationship and with zero knowledge of what her life would really be like afterwards. It seemed like she just couldn't pass up the "role of a lifetime" as the next Princess Grace/Diana. Time will tell. I hope for Harry's sake that it works out.

    4. I have to agree with your assessment, Am. I think everyone hopes Harry has not made a big mistake and that it all works out. Meghan has given reason for some to doubt.

    5. IMO, there are 3 reasons for the hostility you have noticed. 1/ the public knows too much about her. Her past, her family, her friends, her opinions, her tastes, her pictures, her interviews are all out there. And people are going to judge with their own standards.
2/ she has been constantly hailed as a strong ambitious woman who wants to change things. The line is very fine to arrogant know it all. There is usually no tolerance towards self assuredness. Thus no honeymoon phase for her, no room for error. Also, if she deviates from the norm, sartorially or otherwise it will be seen as her marking her ground, refusing to follow the lead.
3/ she was a celebrity. The royal family must not be confused with celebrities, that is the conviction of those who support it. Her every move, her every outfit will be met with the question, is this too Hollywood?
The combination of those 3 reasons can lead people to conclusions like that of Am about her genuineness or simply show her in an unattractive light.

    6. Am 3:20 PM, I re-watched the Harry/Meghan interview and Meghan says she "did not know much about Harry." She did not claim to know nothing about him, as you stated in your comment.

At the end of the day, how much do we (even Royal watchers) really know about Will, Kate, Harry, etc.? I think, not so much. We see what they wear, learn about their causes, and pick up a few clues regarding their private lives on occasion. But that's it.

When Meghan said she did not know much about Harry, I think I understand what she meant.

    7. I didn’t see Lizzie accuse anyone of racism once in the comment. She alluded to the fact that there has been a lot of overtly racist commentary surrounding the new Duchess, but she didn’t accuse anyone of it. It’s rather interesting how in the supposedly racist free 21st century (lol), that was what you took offence to. The lady doth protest too much etc etc.?

    1. I thought Kate looked absolutely stunning. I hope she wears this at least once more for a public occasion. The color was perfection on the DoC.

    2. Kate looks beautiful! Love the hat and jewelry.
Meghan...the color is very pretty. I,too, think the off the shoulder should be worn to a different venue. The thing that I keep noticing is how her waist and bust never seem to fit properly. The wedding gown, the white dress at the function with Prince Charles and now this. Notice how the button is pulling and the lining is showing? I'm no expert but I think it's her body type. She doesn't have a defined waist, which is probably why we've seen her wearing more wrap style dresses and coats. Why can't the designers fit her properly?

  18. Kate looked great today, IMO. Loved the dress, the colour, fit, material--whatever it was, possibly a summer-wt. silk--and the style. I very much like a square neckline on Kate and, combined with the puff sleeves, very cleverly reduced her shoulder breadth.

About the hat, whilst I'm pleased to see her move on from fascinators, I would've preferred a hat much like Meghan's, something with simpler lines. The style she's wearing today seems to require a lot of embellishment to work--just too fussy, I think. But, great colour nonetheless.

I really enjoyed the Kiki jewellery Kate wore today--and this neckline calls out for a necklace--a single line of pearls, with matching pearl earrings, might've done the job, too. Still, those topaz earrings were terrific.

@Am. Re Meghan's choice of dress, she may've ordered these dresses BEFORE she was aware of the dress rules, or, the rules may've changed a bit, as there seems to've been a sea change in royal leadership of late. (And I have read that Charles had intended to take charge of the Firm by his 70th birthday. Hard to blame him, really.) I suppose it's possible that Meghan's testing the waters, attempting to push the boundaries, but...that carries its own risks. Think Diana.

All in all, I think both Kate and Meghan looked good on the balcony. I'm giving the gold star to Kate, however, given that she's so recently given birth for the third time, which ain't easy on the stomach muscles. I can certainly understand why she depends on Sarah Burton for special occasions; the House of McQueen never lets her down.

  19. I loved Kate's look. I thought the dress fit her beautifully and the shoulder styling and neckline really did pick it up a notch. The tailoring was really fantastic from the photos I have seen. I really like her hat, I thought the shape helped balance all the flowers and ribbon, I really thought it was quite an impressive hat. The kids looked so cute. Loved seeing them all on the balcony and interacting. All the ladies looked great. Meghan looked beautiful, I was not a fan of the off shoulder look, not because there is anything "wrong" about the off shoulder look but only because when I looked at the dress I kept thinking lovely summer cocktail dress or an evening outdoor formal wedding. It just did not look quite like a formal day dress. But it is a gorgeous dress.

  20. Thank you Jane for including Meghan in the post & hope that you will continue to do so. Enjoy your posts so much and would be great to keep up with both Kate & Meghan in a single blog as you've done here. Look forward to watching as Meghan's style evolves, especially since her fashion choices will likely be a bit more daring/bold.... Makes me think of how Diana pushed the boundaries and was such a style icon. Will be fun to watch!

  21. Thanks again for the wonderful photographs. Catherine does indeed look superb. I love everything about her dress, hat jewellery, and am amazed at her beautiful figure 6 weeks or so post natal! Meagan really suits that hue of pink, adore her hat; however, I thought the tailoring of her dress bodice was off - a mite ill-fitting.

  22. Was it just me or did EVERYONE (but especially Kate) seem unusually subdued today? Even the crowds were smaller and quieter than usual! It seemed so odd..maybe a security threat of some kind?

    3. I think it was because Lord Guthrie fell off his horse. It was right in front of Buckingham Palace and they said he fell on his head. He's 79 years old so this is serious business. He was rushed to hospital and it delayed the fly past.

The crowd was late being allowed to move as Field Marshall Lord Guthrie became ill and fell from his horse. The police kept the area clear so he could be treated and taken to the hospital

    5. Yes, I did and I wondered if anyone else thought so. I thought maybe Catherine was tired and thinking of getting back to the baby. Meghan also seemed subdued, maybe because it was a first time event for her.

  23. Both Kate and Meghan look amazing! Love everything about Kate's look, except for the sleeves. The sleeves seem to be too close to the dreaded (for me) leg of mutton look.

  26. Kate was stunning. Perfection in every way. And that hat! A work of art. IMO the twists give it some punch, all flowers would have been perhaps too bland. Or perhaps not, but I love it like it is.

  27. I thought Kate looked amazing - absolute perfection. I know some people have been crtical about Megan's outfit, but it must be pretty daunting trying to get things correct first time around. Is it just me, but I thought the little girl was a bit disrespectful when the National Anthem was being played and I hope her mother had a word with her later!

  28. I don't know, this might be a really unpopular opinion but I think Savannah's behavior on the balcony was somewhat rude and unbecoming. She is 7 years old and probably has a grasp on the role of her grandmother and great grandmother. I know she's not in the spotlight much and her parents aren't principal royals, but I would think she'd be on her best behavior for this occasion. There's also a video of her really forcibly pushing George down the hill at the polo match yesterday. Yes, kids will be kids, their behavior is unpredictable, it was all in good fun, rough housing is fine, but it seemed like a little much to me.

    1. I do not get that impression of the polo interactions. They seem to have a typical kid relationship. I suspect she will got a bit of a talking to after the balcony event but frankly ignoring it when it was going on while on the balcony was the best way to make sure she did not start to view it as a way to get attention. We do not really know how many eagle eyes and bent over talks all the kids had before and while they were on the balcony. I think they both may have been told to pipe down and then George kept it up and she was being a smarty pants by covering his mouth. But I am just speculating but there were plenty of older adults to get the word to the kids to behave and having it come from someone other than your parents in a public spot can be a very strong lesson.

    2. I agree she should not have covered George's mouth but really, she's 7. I work with kids and as much as you tell them to be on good behavior, there is no telling what they will do. Being around kids full-time I interpreted her behavior as simply being extremely comfortable with her second-cousins and having a very good and close relationship with them. She was seen comforting and hugging Charlotte on at least two occasions. They seem to have a sibling-type relationship which is so nice to see. They are children, well-behaved yet not perfect. If they were fearful and too guarded of the press at this age it could lead to too much later. Overall, they seem to be very healthy, happy children. We should all agree that that is what will lead to healthy adults later and a healthy monarchy.
