[Updated] Kate & Meghan Watch Wimbledon Ladies' Final Together

Saturday, July 14, 2018

This is a big, big weekend! The Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex are on their first joint-engagement together as they attend the Wimbledon ladies' final. This event was announced just a few days ago, and obviously sparked huge excitement among fans. The new sisters-in-law will watch Meghan's good friend Serena Williams compete against Angelique Kerber for the champion's title.

Wimbledon tweeted out a video this morning featuring the two arriving, which gave us a lovely early look at the fashion.

These two women, at this particular match, create the perfect combo. Kate is a dedicated tennis fan generally as well as the patron of the All England Club and Meghan is good friends with tennis star and fellow American Serena Williams!

Before the two took their seats, however, they met with some of the former champs of centre court, and with the ball boys and ball girls, which always provides very sweet photos!

RAF Benevolent Fund
And another chance to get a full look at the fashion!

I love this hat Meghan has brought along, but as of this writing, she has yet to put it on. Hopefully soon!

The two royal ladies then headed to take their seats for the match:

Nadal and Djokovic's match is apparently running quite long (I don't have tv and therefore not watching the match), so Kate and Meghan are getting a double-dose of tennis this afternoon.

Wimbledon

Omid Scobie has been sharing great commentary and videos on his Twitter feed which has kept me up-to-speed.

This is a nice long clip from Christin Zi showing Kate and Meghan chatting. Bonus points if you speak German, which I do not.

To the fashion! Kate looks really lovely. She is taking her time losing her baby weight (I approve!), and this dress is very flattering. I have vacillated on whether the print actually features tennis balls. Right now I am saying they are tennis balls, which is classic Kate, right?  Although the gathered pleats at her hip and shoulder could have veered off toward from-froo, they work well on this dress and added interest to a relatively simple design.

Kate's pearl earrings by In2Design and her new Dolce & Gabbana bag are both fresh accessories that polished this look to perfection.

These earrings are by Swedish label In2Deisgn, and Kate wore them while, appropriately, on tour in Sweden!

Meghan has stuck to her style profile in a Ralph Lauren trouser ensemble. Both this blouse and the wide-legged trousers are by the American label. I like this look! It was very early 20th century, which is fun to see at Wimbledon. Meghan can really pull off these looks quite well. I do think the blouse could be a little more pulled-together, and she probably should have had the trousers tailored, too. When standing still, they were pooling, which isn't a great look, although I myself am guilty of this often. All in all, though, the look balanced well the casual nature of a sports game on a summer afternoon and her position as a senior royal in the Royal Box! I thought it was a win!

I will update later this afternoon when we have more pictures. It sounds like Rafa and Djokovic are still playing, so Kate and Meghan haven't even gotten to the main event yet!

  2. They both look gorgeous. I love Kate’s hair. Fun to see them together, and obviously enjoying themselves.

  3. All the love. Kate wears some of my favs @ Wimbeldon (and her tennis "faces" during the games are just delightful!) and this was no exception. Gorgeous! I love the gathers as details and the print. Her. Hair!
I adored Meghan's outfit as well. I think they both went as "themselves" to an event/sport they have shared interest in. Very cool.

  4. They both look fabulous! The design of Kate's dress is pretty and highly flattering. On the fence about the tennis ball print but it is classic Kate. I think her hair looks especially nice here.

I love Meghan's look in theory but agree some tailoring for both the shirt and trousers would have made her look more pulled together. Also, trousers are wrinkling up quite a bit.

  5. A straight-set fashion win for both Kate and Meghan if you ask me. Their styles are so different but they looked perfectly stunning together and contrary to what some people like to propagate neither was trying to steal the spotlight from the other.

Love Kate's new bag and the cute tennis ball print on the dress. The perfect nod to the event! Meghan's outfit was just as appropriate. The Marlene pants give it a bit of a vintage vibe but it's still very modern. Reminds me of something Victoria Beckham would wear.

  6. They both look absolutely gorgeous today and this event helped me to finally put my finger on what I've been trying to articulate since the engagement announcement last fall. I love that both women embrace their personal style and preferences and they are both gorgeous (this is not a comparison comment!) but I find that I connect more with Kate's style. And I think it's because it's more of the style I would take if I was in that role. It doesn't mean that one is better or worse than the other, just that my personal preferences tend to align more with Kate's style.

    1. She had it on but her hair was covering it. I saw a couple of glimpses of it in a few photos on the news sites.

Did anyone else think Billie Jean King looked completely bored by the whole thing?

  8. Kate is picture perfect in this outfit. I don't think those are tennis balls, they're just spheres but are certainly on theme. I love the structure of the dress and she wears it beautifully. I would have preferred different shoes but that's pretty standard for me. Her hair looked gorgeous today.

I am not sure about Meghan's outfit. I agree with Faith that, in theory, it's a good look. It just needed to look more tailored and a little less messy - especially since it's RL. A size smaller on the shirt, if you roll the sleeves do it neatly, hem the pants. Also not a fan of the messy bun. Overall she looked a bit rumpled. As has been said before, she always gets it almost right. On the other hand, they did look to be enjoying themselves. Fun for Kate to have a female companion and fun for Meghan to have a seasoned royal with her during these early excursions while she gets her feet under her. Do you think they compare notes on William and Harry's little quirks?

    2. Robin, I have felt since seeing Meghan at her first official appearance with Harry in Toronto wearing frayed jeans, half-tucked in shirt, and messy hair that she tries to look on trend while looking like she is not trying and her outfit is the least of her concerns. I have suggested she now espouses the "if you can't join them, beat them" attitude; but I have learned that each of these details is popular in the celebrity/Hollywood set. I think the partially untucked shirt has gone mainstream with shirts designed specifically to be worn untucked in back.
The DOC is a tough act to follow. And then there are those adorable children snatching the spotlight, too.

On the whole, I enjoy seeing what Meghan comes up with fashion-wise. She is starting out with a fashion emphasis but may eventually try to deflect interest in her clothing, as Kate did,in order to highlight her non-fashion interests. It didn't work too well for Kate or we wouldn't be having the discussions we do. However, I do think Kate's priorities have become well-known in the process. Soon Meghan will settle into the royal rut as all the other spouses have...well, most of them. anon1

    3. I've never cared for the sloppy-ish Hollywood look and now that Meghan is a royal duchess I hope she embraces her new role and leaves the old one behind. She was never an A-list Hollywood star so I think she's not quite used to being photographed and scrutinized everywhere she goes. Her photos are now a part of British history so she should look timeless and not trendy. Nobody cares what Julia Roberts or Jennifer Aniston wears when they're out at a sporting event because that's not their job, however, Meghan's first job now is appearing in public in support of the crown. What she chooses to wear when she's out supporting her charities will be reflective of her attitude. Kate always dresses to support either by color or style. Sometimes there's a glaring miss but the intent is usually there. Showing up in something high fashion just for the sake of high fashion doesn't play well. If Meghan wants to do high fashion and royal she should look to Princess Charlene of Monaco who always looks so well put together. Sometimes I don't get her choice of style but it is always impeccably carried off.

    4. Oh PLEASE Robin! Diana, for example, wore plenty "trendy" outfits back in the day which seem utterly ridiculous looking back at them now. KATE choses to wear timeless clothes for the most part and that is fine because it's her thing. If Meghan enjoys high fashion and follows trends that's fine too because it's entirely her personal choice and has nothing to do with the causes she supports.

    5. Lol Robin sounds like she is less than impressed with Meghan. We get it, she's not Kate, but OBVIOUSLY she is entitled to wear what she is comfortable in. If you don't like her outfit it's fine. But her style is definitely more relatable to younger working women. Kate looks good but a lot of her outfits are fit for 'Royal appearances'. I can't imagine anyone wearing a white peplum dress suit to work. I think kates style is also quite a bit more Conservative than Diana's. Anyway stop hating on Meghan. She looks great. And so does Kate.

    6. I loved Meghan's outfit. She's much more stunning than Kate and, having said that, I love Kate! Kudos to both!!❤️❤️๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

    7. I agree Kirsten and Anon. I find it fascinating that Meghan's style includes more than a coatdress or a dress. Because frankly I can count on one hand how many timeless pieces Kate has ever worn.

    8. Robin, I agree with you. Meghan's look would not be as disappointing if she weren't representing the crown. She'd be free to wear whatever she wants. She is representing the crown now, though. I think she at times does try to look as if she's not trying, because maybe she thinks that's not as bad as trying and failing.

  9. The commentator in the German clip only states, that Kate and Meghan are there for the women’s final. And he is thinking out loud if the two are probably already chatting about the upcoming final. Nothing too glamorous. He is just a normal sports commentator from “zweites deutsches Fernsehen - ZDF“. Which means something like channel 2 in Germany.

  10. Didn't the duchesses look sweet together? Like they were really enjoying being together and not creating a PR moment.

I though Catherine was a solid win today. She wears dresses well, they are her "look." This one was perfect. Cute and summery, Wimbledon white with a fun pattern to jazz it up.

    Her hair is totally gorgeous.

I'm not crazy about the suede shoes in summer.

I love her earrings and bag too. Again, summery and cute.

Overall, a definite "yes" from me!

Meghan. Bless her heart. She's beautiful and stylish, but just misses the mark.

Her blouse and trousers were beautiful, just not together. The whites in each didn't complement each other. The pants were dressier than the shirt.
And for heaven's sake, with a million dollar (!!!) wardrobe, she can afford a good tailor! She needs to wear clothes that fit.
The messy bun doesn't do it for me either. She's always fiddling with her hair; it makes her look insecure.
The ponytail she had the other day was wonderful! A great alternative to a bun.

However,I loved seeing the ladies together. I hope we see lots of "ladies days" in the future, maybe with Countess Sophie too!

  13. Thanks for the great (and quick) post! It was a treat to see them hanging out together. I loved how in clips of them leaving they were still talking to each other as they got into their cars- that’s something I do with close friends. However- I just don’t see any baby weight!! She looks healthy, happy, and gorgeous. At what point do we stop calling it baby weight? I’m keepinf my fingers crossed that she doesn’t go back to some of her ultra thin years. Maybe she won’t- she looks completely comfortable in herself lately.

  14. Meghan is obviously more high fashion than Kate, who always looks beautiful but generally makes classic safe choices. Nice to see M mixing things up. They both look lovely. And may rub off on each other in time, which would be fun!

  15. Generally, I agree with you, Robin (July 14, 11:36 AM); Kate has finally nailed the art of wearing another version of a polka dot dress, and I agree that they don"t look like tennis balls--more akin to plantetary spheres, IMO.

I particularly liked the light frou-frou on the left shoulder of the dress, and the gathering at the right hip. Nicely done. I would've preferred the blush pink shoes and purse in black, however--think it would've looked snappier, not to mention more versatile, and black and white/cream are very summery.

Kate's hair looked great, and I am amazed at the speed with which Kate has lost her baby weight, this time round, and has regained her figure; seemed to me that she really piled on the pounds when carrying little Louis. Of course, that might've been due to negative photo-shopping, or perhaps to longer use of IV fluid-feeding, if her HG was especially bad. Who knows?

My husband asked me--we watched Kerber beat Williams today--whether I thought Kate invited Meghan or Meghan invited Kate, which made ME wonder too. Any ideas, folks?

    1. Yes, interesting question. I would imagine that Kate, as the new Royal patron of the All English Tennis Club, could invite guests. Perhaps Meghan can invite guests; but, I think I remember reading somewhere that the royal box is managed very carefully. I also suspect it was seen as a good opportunity for Meghan to accompany another senior royal in her program to "learn the ropes". And, although both ladies looked quite relaxed and comfortable in each other's presence, Kate did come across as confident in her role, whereas understandably, Meghan did look a tinch nervous at times. BTW; isn't it great to see Kate in that senior role? What a transformation over the last 7 years.

On that note, it highlights the fact that even though Meghan is confident and polished in the public domain, she still needs the time, space and support to acquire all the tacit knowledge and royal protocol that comes along with the job. I think she is handling it all well.

PS: JC, I'm impressed that your husband asks questions like that.

    2. As royal patron I am guessing that Kate invited Meghan. Since Meghan's friend, Serena, was playing I imagine she could have gone anyway but Kate is the senior royal there and so I'm thinking Meghan would be her guest in the royal box. It's a lovely gesture either way. Meghan has now had two visits without Harry along so she's getting some good practice in for her first solo appearance whenever that will be.

    3. I think the way it works is that all the royals can sort of pick and choose when/how often they want to attend, but more senior royals/those with official wimbledon roles get priority. I don't think kate has to invite Meghan, but instead the host organization (that kate is patron of) always invites the brf to join them, just as kate attended as a royal before becoming patron. I imagine the royals also try to coordinate w each other to spread out their support over much of the tournament ofc. Attending together also may have been decided well in advance as a pr strat (I'd be shocked if as soon as the engagement happened the 4 of them +their staff didn't discuss the best opportunities for Meghan to appear at events with the others, esp will and kate, to show bonding). Also with the world cup 3rd place game and final during the women's and men's wimbledon finals, I wouldn't be surprised if it wouldve been Meghan and Harry on this day if not for that conflict (leaving kate to just attend the men's finals with will). After all kate had nvr attended the women's finals before.

    6. Kate invited Meghan? I thought Kate is on maternity leave, so how on earth she is responsible for who is sitting in the royal box? I am sure she works tiresomely behind the scenes...

  20. Thank you Jane. Lovely to see Catherine and Meghan together at Wimbledon! Kate looked wonderful: Jenny Packham dress just perfect, her hair so bouncy, and that bag -- drool. I really liked Meghan's blouse - she looks good in the crisp blue and white; however, the trousers were a miss. Not only do they look cream against the white of the blouse, but they are too formal (for the occasion) and too long. I did like her her in the messy bun.

  23. Kate looks great, the dress is very flattering, a big surprise is the lovely bag, not another boring clutch, only the shoes don‘t fit perfectly, they are too dark. Meghan‘s look is more stylish, the trouser are great, but why are the hems of the tousers are so long, touching the ground, the oversized style of the shirt is ok, there are a lot of oversized tops this summer, I don‘t really like that look

  24. Kate looks amazing! I love the dress, classic Kate. As for Meghan *sigh* I hope Ralph Lauren gave her these pieces for free, I just think for such a hot day at Wimbledon she shouldn’t be wearing long sleeve.
