[Full Post] The Duchess is in Dolce! Kate Wears Bright Yellow to Wimbledon with William

Sunday, July 15, 2018

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended Wimbledon together today to watch Kevin Anderson play Novak Djokovic in the men's final. Kate opted for a bright yellow Dolce & Gabbana dress (quick ID by Perth's Fashion and Kate's Closet!) and bag, and earrings and a necklace from Asprey!

Yesterday, Kate and Meghan chatted with tennis stars and ball girls and boys, and today William and Kate met with some of tennis's superstars before the match. Wimbledon shared this video:

Wimbledon

This yellow is amazing against the green of the Royal Box. I won't the ball, this ensemble is a huge hit with me!!

The final always brings a real panoply of celebrities to centre court, and William and Kate are often surrounded by a sea of well-known faces. Today, one of their nearby companions was Rod Laver, an 11-time Grand Slam champion (whom they also met in the Wimbledon video above). It's not hard to see why Kate adores Wimbledon.

William and Kate always have an absolute blast at this annual sporting event. Yesterday was fun, and both royal ladies clearly enjoyed the day, but there was a detectable awkwardness. Both Meghan and Kate obviously knew that their every move was being analyzed. Kate's been the royal lady under a certain amount of fire when these two are stacked up against each other by the media and fans. Nevertheless, as the experienced and more senior royal, Kate was beautifully composed and regal under the pressure, and the two navigated the afternoon well.

But, today Kate could let her breath out a little and enjoy her husband's company and the sport. Her mood was bubbly and back in her zone. AFP shared what might have been the best picture of the day:

Djokovic won pretty handily from what I heard, and his comments on court were so sweet. I am sure William and Kate, so recently parents for a third time, were smiling.

As is customary, William and Kate congratulated the players afterwards. Kate remarked how hot it must have been, and Djokovic remarked it was the warmest day at Wimbledon! I love how when Djokovic asked after the Cambridge children, William jumped in with some joke that moved the conversation along.

Let's talk about the fashion! Kate wore a new dress by Dolce & Gabbana in this bright, tennis-ball yellow. It is from the label's Resort collection and retailed at over $1,000. It is a pretty simple sheath dress, which is right up Kate's alley, and I particularly love the modified flutter sleeves! They are such a cute addition to this already sunny dress, and were very flattering and feminine on the Duchess.

Kate wore earrings that are new to us, but I suspect have been in her jewelry box for a while. These are Asprey's Oak Leaf earrings. Intertwining oak leaves of pavé diamonds in 18 karat gold, they originally retailed for £9,000. It is possible Kate was wearing the same earrings sans the diamonds. Right now I can't tell from the pictures available. [With an updated picture, I am leaning toward the version without diamonds, sadly].

Kate paired these earrings with a necklace from the same collection. Kate has had this Woodland charm necklace since at least 2014, when it first debuted on tour in Australia. She has chosen three pendants, the acorn, the oak, and a mushroom.

The acorn is a family motif on the Middleton coat of arms, the oak leaf represents strength and the oaks prevalent in Berkshire where Kate was raised. The symbolism that the mushroom holds for Kate is less clear. I love the personal significance of this jewelry and its strong connection to her Middleton roots.

Finally, Kate carried the D&G Miss Sicily bag she debuted yesterday on her visit with Meghan, her new Ray-Ban Youngster sunnies, and wore the citrine cocktail ring that we noticed at Harry and Meghan's wedding. She was most definitely dressed to the nines. :)

It is my opinion that only some people can successfully wear yellow. Kate doesn't wear it all that often, but each time she does she reminds how spectacularly some people can wear this bold hue. Kate has worn very bright yellows several times. Excluding softer shades, which Kate also likes, her first bright yellow was the Jaeger she wore while on tour in Southeast Asia in 2012 (left). The Roksanda Ilincic she first wore in Sydney and then recycled at Wimbledon (middle) is still one of her best (why doesn't she wear Roksanda again?!), and finally, most recently, she wore this cheerful Jenny Packham in Germany (right) in 2017.

Kate was lovely yesterday, but it's almost hard to believe what a difference 24 hours makes. She was just glowing today. Her hair was magnificent (it's getting a little longer again!) and her tan was practically glowing. Wimbledon is always such a treat for royal watching, and certainly this weekend was no exception!

P.S. Louis's official christening photos will be released tonight, so check back at some point!

  2. Btw, us Antipodeans are sacrificing sleep to watch this match AND the FIFA final! I’m gonna need coffee like you, Jane. Maybe a caffeine IV drip 😬

  3. I love this dress. It would be perfect if her hair was styled as yesterday.
I also believe the earrings are new. And she is wering that citrine cocktail ring too!
    Wonderful

  4. Although this shade of yellow is harsh on Kate, I think it is a pretty summer dress and much more forgiving than the JP she wore yesterday. Happy to see the citrine ring again. Her hair has looked spectacular the last two days. The lowlights are giving it great texture and depth of color.

It was fun to see Kate and Meghan together yesterday but it is always a pleasure to see Kate and William at Wimbolden. Their enjoyment is contagious.

    1. What needs to be forgiven?

The comment is read as a reference to her weight. Just like the blog post yesterday. I thought that was not for discussion on this blog?

    2. I am not sure where forgiveness comes in, but addressing the rest of your question. I don't let people "slim-shame" Kate, i.e. come and say she is unhealthily thin or anorexic. That's very offensive. Mentioning her baby-weight is entirely different. Kate was very slender, she got pregnant (a natural occurrence), put on weight in the course of her pregnancy (again, a necessary progression), and is now losing that weight slowly. She looks stunning, and is clearly comfortable with getting back to her regular size at a slower pace. It isn't rude or strange to acknowledge the extra weight she has. As someone mentioned on another post, it is quite inspirational to see Kate so confident in this transition time--it's a great message to other women. Nothing wrong here, and she looks amazing.

    3. Jeepers, I don't think we need to dissect semantics on here. I meant "more forgiving" as a synonymn for "more complimentary" or "more flattering". I'm just saying that today's dress looks better on her than yesterday's and not for any specific reason. The design of the D&G simply looks better on her.

"More forgiving" may be a generational saying that people don't hear much anymore. My mother and grandmother used it all the time. It doesn't automatically refer to weight but can refer to other body imperfections such as long waistedness, short legs etc that an outfit masks. To tell you the truth, her weight never factored into what I said. I just thought the JP dress wasn't as flattering for her figure as this one. I think Kate looks terrific, actually.

Thanks for sticking up for me, Jane 😊

    4. I've heard the expression Faith. In my experience it's not connected specifically to body weight or even to anything about the human body. For example, it's said satin paint is "more forgiving" than semi-gloss if the to-be-painted surface isn't perfectly smooth. I read the expression quite recently on a major paint company website so I'm not even sure it's a generational expression.

  7. Kate looks terrific, but not a fan of the dress, kind of meh. I was hoping Meghan would rub off on her a little and she'd try some different styles. Alas after yesterday and today doesn't look like that's going to happen. -J

  8. Yellow is such a joyous colour and this dress looks fabulous on Kate with her tan! Anon 11:47, many of us wish Kate would rub off on Meghan - so to each her own :-D

  9. Jane, yesterday you mentioned that Kate was taking her time losing the baby weight and of course you’re right; this is a bit heavier than her normal choice but I have to say she looks AMAAAAZING with this figure. Still so slim and fit! And this dress is absolutely gorgeous. Hair and makeup are on point too! I’d ditch the watch. This look is much stronger than yesterday’s IMO.

    1. She does! I noticed the slower snap-back at polo, where she looked magnificent. I'm glad she is taking it a little easier this time around.

  10. I wanna like it but can't help feeling underwhelmed. The sleeves are cute and the style of the dress is very flattering on Kate but the colour isn't great and we've seen her in similar dresses one time too many. I preferred yesterday's look, it was a little fresher.

So interesting Kirsten. My thought was the exact opposite: I thought the black and white Jenny Packham was fine (and just, well, fine) until today. I really think the yellow dress proves how unflattering the JP dress was. Kate looks 15 pounds lighter today. This yellow dress is incredibly flattering. I think yesterday's wasn't.

    2. Kelly, I agree that the yellow dress was flattering on Kate. I've compared both outfits again and I can see how the "ruffles" (for lack of a better word) at the hip add some volume which makes her looks slightly rounder. Funnily though it's especially the ruffles at the shoulder and hip and the polka dot print that I think makes the dress so youthful and fun. The yellow dress is elegant but kind of generic.

  11. It's so interesting to read all our different opinions and both appreciate and with respect.

I preferred today's dress and hair. Kate is so beautiful inside and out without any airs of any kind.

She sure enjoys tennis. Kate is such a delight to observe. It is so nice to see that she and Meghan seem to have a good relationship. I too am glad that Kate feels comfortable in losing her after weight slowly.

William and Harry are so fortunate to have found just the right life mates. It's been beautiful as an observing participant.

  12. Oh my gosh! I don't think she could be any more beautiful! She is stunning.

I love the dress. The fit and design is perfect on the duchess. Her clothes fit her like a glove.
The cut is great for an outdoor summer event. I like the sleeves, and the fit around the waist make her look slim and healthy. Ok - I know she is slim and healthy, this dress accentuates it.

The color is pretty bright, but she wears it well.

I love seeing her in dresses as opposed to coat dresses. Her coats are lovely, but they are not something that we wear in my neck of the woods. (Way too hot!!) I can see myself wearing her dresses more easily than I can her coats. Although, in the right climate, I would give some of her coats a try too.

Her jewelry was nice, I loved that big citrine ring. I hope I can see a close up of her earrings.

Her hair is amazing. Long or short, I don't care, she has the most beautiful hair ever.

I hope she will be out and about again soon.

  13. Kate looks absolutely beautiful in this sunny yellow dress. As one who cannot wear that color I am always pleased to see someone who can! I love the reappearance of the Woodland necklace and the citrine ring. Her hair has looked gorgeous this weekend. The purse is adorable but, IMO, doesn't compliment this dress. The shoes...the less said the better, sigh. The best thing is seeing her there with William and their wonderful relationship. Their strong bond and mutual respect for each other, along with a strong friendship, all combine to make their love story so ideal. She has really come into her own as a senior royal as well so she exudes self confidence. We have seen so much of Kate during this particular maternity leave. The upcoming summer holiday will seem horribly long as it comes on the end of her leave.

    2. The Daily Mail reported that she had the same shoes and purse she wore yesterday. So, praline suede it is once again.

    3. Wish she'd worn those pretty sandals she wore last year! There aren't many occasions for her to wear sandals so I always have high hopes for wimbledon.

  14. Kate looks so beautiful. Her hair is the perfect length, I really hope she doesn’t cut it. She looks so young and healthy, she positively glows. I love the dress, and there are pictures of William and Kate interacting that are charming. They look besotted with each other.

  15. I didn’t detect any awkwardness yesterday, maybe some dissapointment as I’m sure they were both hoping for a Serena win but overall they both seemed quite happy to be there together. Meghan seems to have genuine, strong and happy relationships with all of Harry’s family, especially Kate and it is wonderful to see.
I’ve missed Kate being out and about so much and have loved both outfits from the past 2 days. I walked into Target today and found a dress very similar so she is obviously right on trend with the bright color and flutter sleeves. The only thing that stopped me buying it was the size. I hope we can see her again soon!

  16. Kate looks beautiful. The dress is beautifully cut and the color works on her. She was very visible in the stands. The jewelry is lovely too. I love seeing William and Kate together in a more casual setting. You can see their intense connection even without any PDA. Her assistant looked great today too.

The next month is going to be long without Kate. I hope she enjoys her time!!

    Hope from USA

  17. How adorable they are! Still so in love & enjoying each other's company. Kate seemed relaxed to me yesterday & very close & comfortable with Meghan but today you can see such a difference. Clearly, she is loved & respected by her husband & just blossoms when with him. Great example to many!!

  18. Jane - I understand, your blog = your rules.

But commenting on a person’s weight, whether too light as in “slim shaming” or too heavy as in “taking time to lose the baby weight” is rude. Couldn’t you simply say she looks fabulous as a new mother to her third child?

    ReplyDelete
  19. My only comment is that I am not a fan of her darker hair color- I prefer the brighter, more high-lighted style she has frequently had in the past....But otherwise, she is still perfection for me! <3

  20. Perfect, perfect, perfect. Gorgeous colour that is so flattering on her and lovely for summer. I loved the soft, beachy waves in her hair. This was a fabulous look.

  21. "Kate's been the royal lady under a certain amount of fire when these two are stacked up against each other by the media and fans." I don't think this is accurate. I am a fan of both women. And I think the constant comparing narratives target and disparage them both - as you can see in the headlines reported here https://www.google.co.za/amp/s/amp.thedailybeast.com/its-time-to-stop-the-classist-sexist-attacks-on-meghan-markle

  22. Wow, amazing couple. And Kate is so beautiful today! Love the dress, love the earrings, love her hair...a big win for me. And she seem so relaxed near William, very in love.
    Good work Jane!
