[Updated] The Cambridges Pictured Heading to Church at Balmoral

Sunday, August 26, 2018

This morning, Emily Andrews confirmed that the Cambridges are at their annual visit to the Queen at Balmoral in Scotland. Sure enough, pictures have emerged of the Duchess accompanying Her Majesty the Queen to Crathie Kirk for the Sunday morning church service. William is in the front seat, which you can see from other snaps at the Daily Mail here.

Did anything stick out to you right off the bat? Kate is wearing a very smart, new ensemble, in addition to accompanying the Queen. Typically, Kate recycles when she goes to church at Balmoral. I am trying to think of a time we have ever seen her debut a coat in the car on the way to Crathie Kirk and, just from memory, I am coming up with nada.

September 2013
This is a bespoke Catherine Walker, which was Susan at WKW's initial guess, and has been confirmed by the label. The Duchess paired it with diamond and pearl earrings she has on loan from the Queen. These earrings were created in an art deco style with pearls then-Princess Elizabeth was gifted from the king of Bahrain to mark her marriage.  Kate has worn these to a couple of big ticket events, including Remembrance Sunday and Royal Ascot (below). Given their provenance, I would categorize them as accessories with some clout.

Kate topped off her look with the Lock & Co. hat she first wore to a memorial service for Richard Meade, and then recycled (although it was the hat's first official outing) at an event for the RAF Cadets.

Although we only have a partial view of the ensemble today, I liked everything I could make out! It is interesting to see this hat again, and it looks to work really well with the buttoned up coat. One thing is certain, the summer is almost over when Kate is heading to Balmoral wrapped up in a coat and blanket!

There was more news about the family's Scottish visit. Emily tweeted that Kate took George on his first grouse hunt on Friday, and that the family have been joined by Zara and Mike Tindall and their children, in addition to the Phillips, the Wessexes, and Prince Charles.

Tumblr
From the picture I have seen on Tumblr (above), it looks like Kate is driving sitting shotgun (several of you have noted that Kate is likely the driver, wheel is on the opposite side!) and might be wearing the hat she wore for the Vogue photoshoot.

I have some thoughts about Kate's clothes today and this appearance and am typing them up now and hope to publish them in the morning. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that post tomorrow. In the meantime, this kid has to get to bed.

  1. Lots of family there; of course there are a lot of children of school age

Love Catherine's outfit. Interesting to see the Duke and Duchess travelling with the Queen.I suspect that it has something to do with the Markle family's criticism of the Middletons
I suspect Catherine, Zara and the two children were going to join the shooting party for lunch.
George's toy rabbit looks new--not like a chewed up old favourite

    2. What a mean thing to say about a child you have never met!

    3. Jane, did you really approve of that comment??
      It's rude and insulting - a child!

    4. Anon 5:57, I agree! I know she’s a child but she always looks very mischievous 😏

    5. I am surprised the comment from Anonymous 5:57 was allowed. Let's keep kids off limits from criticism, OK? She is a child and she acts like one.

    6. She's 7. While everyone is entitled to have an opinion, I think it's kind of bullying behavior to write on a public blog a 7 yr old "just looks like" she is naughty but really she is "mean as hell." But hey, maybe that's just me. Maybe it is ok to say things like that as long as we don't write anything too insulting about the royal adults clothing choices ;)

    7. Oh my goodness, no. I am so, so sorry! I have received several complaints and they all are showing as responses to Jean's comment. I've reread Jean's a million times and I keep thinking, I just don't see what she said that was wrong. Ooops. I did not see this at all and don't recall approving it. Sorry!

  2. Kate is actually in the driver's seat...British vehicle. The coat has been confirmed as Catherine Walker. I love that George is carrying a bunny. So cute.

It looks like a Catherine Walker design to me. Also George is so cute, holding a stuffed animal (I believe) on tge way to his first grouse shoot - he is growing up so quickly!

The Phillips family were also there for the weekend.

  5. Her hair and makeup look lovely, and that hat is great. Definitely not a fan of the outfit, as it reads 65 year old attorney to me, but that's okay. Fun to see them out and about and will be happy to have their engagements pick up again soon.

    1. I'm a lawyer and know lots of 65 year old lawyers. I've never met one who looks like this. But.... okay.

I think she looks lovely. I'm sure she is looking forward to getting back to engagements. I'm looking forward to seeing her.

Thanks for the post Jane. Summer's almost over.

  6. Both the Queen and Catherine look wonderful. Love Kate's beautifully tailored Catherine Walker coat dress in the grey tweed pattern. I especially like the retro covered buttons, and piping around the collar - probably in navy. The hat, earrings and healthy tan - perfection.

  7. Wow! I have been waiting for this! I think today is another example of the Duchess of Cambridge 'upping her game' as a senior royal. To me, her bespoke coat, earrings from the Queen's collection and being seated next to the Queen (even taking George to the grouse hunt) scream "I am a future queen and the mother of a future king". Hopefully she finally received the Family order! I think we will see Kate continue being immaculately groomed and elegantly dressed in bespoke outfits and family jewels for most engagements when she returns to work this fall. I don't think we will ever see Kate do the amount of engagements that we would like to see her at, nor should she right now with three small children. I think we will continue to see Kate's engagements as being 'quality over quantity' in the future.

  8. Wouldnt it be special if William was sitting next to his grandmother the queen & Kate riding up front seat? That seems so natural.

  9. Kate looks so duchess-y! Formal and elegant. Love it!

  10. Thank you Jane for the post. I am somehow sad that they are teaching George to hunt birds instead of watching them! This is so sad...

  11. I just love that George has a toy rabbbit, we forget that he's still really a baby himself as he's a big brother !
