William and Kate at Basil's Bar Bash

Friday, August 3, 2018

Emily Nash had a Mustique exclusive a few days ago. She confirmed that William and Kate were on the island, as we suspected, and quoted sources who told her that the two attended the Basil's Bar bash together. I was 98% confident the initial report was correct, but without pictures, and given the unusual timing, I was not entirely certain. This gives the final seal of certainty in my book.

Basil's Bar
This party was at Basil's Bar. I wrote a fairly detailed history of Basil's Bar in my post The Mystique of Mustique, and of the man himself. For those who don't want to do the deep-dive, Basil has been around since the start of the Mustique adventure, and worked his way up from a bartender to the owner. William and Kate invited him to their wedding in 2011, so I think he clearly holds a special place in their ongoing memories of the island hideaway, and in their hearts.

Emily's recent article (which you can read here) has some fun quotes from those who attended the party and saw Will and Kate. It is her comment toward the end of the piece that really highlights why William and Kate like to return to Mustique:
Given the complete privacy of the exclusive island, it comes as no surprise that William and Kate take the opportunity to blend in with other tourists. With a no-fly zone enforced over Mustique and the discretion of other guests, the royals are able to truly relax and let their hair down. On previous trips, William and Kate have played tennis, gone snorkelling and scuba diving, and enjoyed cocktails at the five-star Cotton House resort.
In a  previous article, a fellow traveller spoke to Hello! and gave some insight into how thoroughly the Cambridges take advantage of their tropical trips.  Apparently, William and Kate are accomplished divers:
Martin Katz, a famed Beverly Hills jeweller, and his wife Kelly met the royals in 2008, and speaking exclusively to HELLO! in 2015, Kelly revealed: "They're quite the sportsmen. We went diving and they went very deep, more than 90ft. Our instructor said Martin and I weren't qualified to go on the shark dives they went on."
We know that William and Kate like to live "the ordinary life." From their university days at St. Andrews where they had a very cozy nook at a local pub to their low-key (but still glitzy) nights out at Bunga Bunga, they like the occasional date night.

Their sweet date at the King's Head Hotel in Norfolk is still one of my favorite William and Kate sightings. They were both so naturally relaxed and Kate was dressed down with her hair in a clearly air-dried state of wavy glory. :)

Or their movie nights grabbing popcorn before the show?

Digression into the date-spots of these two aside, the point is they like to get out like anyone else. In Mustique, they can enjoy the same type of beach holiday the rest of us can, without too much paparazzi interference. I was surprised that we didn't get a long lens of them at he beach, or a snap of them transferring at Saint Lucia on the way back. It is possible Hello! will launch an exclusive in the next few weeks, but if not it just shows that even the Cambridges can pull off the occasional complete coup. ;)

Happy Friday, all!

  1. Nice vacation! Glad they can go somewhere where they can blend in and do normal beach trip things that we all take for granted. Wonderful for the children. Unfortunately, this does seem to confirm that they are not planning on any more babies:(

    1. Well, I'm assuming with the Zika threat, she would stay away if she wanted another. They seem to have been avoiding the island the past few years (as far as we know anyway). I hope I'm wrong though.

    2. I agree it's a little unexpected we haven't gotten at least one blurry Mustique shot given  such a long vacation but I suspect they pull off lots of vacation "coups," or at least lots of long weekend mini-coups. If you think about the number of papped leisure-time shots we've seen over 7+ yrs, it's not really very many. I may be wrong but I sort of doubt they've spent all the rest of their time behind the walls of a palace, at the Middletons, or at AH except when doing public duties. They've also shown up with tans at times it wouldn't have been possible to tan in the UK. I'm not complaining, just saying that lack of pictures doesn't mean an actual lack of trips.

I assume the first comment refers to Zika. According to the CDC a woman who tests positive for Zika is supposed to wait 8 weeks before having unprotected sex, a man 6 months. So even if Will got Zika (possible but unlikely in Mustique), that would mean a 4th pregnancy could begin safely as early as when Louis is a bit under 10 months old. I have no idea if they want more children--I'd read Will wanted 2, Kate wanted 3, but have not read anyone but fans wanted them to have 4 :) Regardless, I can't imagine they'd plan another pregnancy sooner than next spring anyway.

    3. Meant to say tests positive, has symptoms, travels to Zika region...regardless, a safe pregnancy would be possible in the spring so I don't know that we can read anything into their choice of vacation spot.

    4. I just looked that up too, Lizzie. So I guess that wouldn't affect them at this point. Most of my infomation comes from two friends whose doctors categorically told them to stay away from infected areas but both are undergoing infertlity treatment so they can't control when they would become pregnant unlike most women. Also, I think warnings were different when the outbreak hit which was when I was paying attention because I had a friend living in Central America at that time who had to postpone having another child. I wonder how breastfeeding is affected? I'll have to look that up.

I agree that just because no one caught them in Mustique the last three years, doesn't mean they haven't been there. I just put two and two together that it appeared that they stopped going when the virus hit and now after the third child, they have started going again. All pure supposition though.

    5. I hope will and Kate don’t have another child just because the public wants them too. And I hope the public dose not berate Kate if SHE and WILL chose to stop at three.

    6. I don't think anyone will berate them for stopping at three, anon 12:27.

    7. Zika has been around for quite a while. They have been to Africa and Asia before, where it’s been since the 70s I believe. Maybe they just wanted to try different places?

    8. MamaBackes, the Zika virus was never confirmed to exist in India, and they did their tour of the South Pacific in 2012.There was no evidence of the Zika virus back then either.

    9. I think the only role Zika plays in this trip is that Pippa couldn't go. I think W&K may have found another way to get to their vacation destinations that the press hasn't yet figured out. Remember last year (or was it the year before) they went on a ski vacation and nobody knew until they released photos when they got home. If they've figured out something like that I say Bravo for them! William and Harry never had a private vacation when their mother was alive.

    10. I recall several photos taken in poor light showing Kate with a darker complexion in a few of the photos of an appearance while others taken at the same time in better light gave no evidence of a fresh tan. There is also make-up. Kate plays tennis and swims in her back garden . One can get effects from sun exposure even when it is cloudy.

I think it is fun to imagine the growing family living a jet-set life such as Angelina Jolie and her six but I doubt that the Cambridges actually do. The York princesses have no children and few royal or other responsibilities that I am aware of. They would be more likely to show up with a tan in mid-winter UK. C&C slip away to the Greek Islands for a little sun from time to time. They both always look tan to me. Or perhaps the high color has other roots. The Wessex's also take sunny holidays, on Majorca, I believe.
We only see those photos, if any, after the fact. Partly because a bit of negotiating goes on before publishing, not because there is a plot to hide vacations- even for security concerns, which are considerable.
I don't think W&C's taking a private, hopefully pap-free holiday should be viewed as sneaking away nor do I think we can extrapolate that one getaway indicates more have secretly occurred.

The truth is--since original reports of seeing the Cambridges at an island airport included sightings of Pippa--who was later proven photographically to be nowhere near the area, and since all we have is the second hand reports via tabloid royal reporters who may or may not be paying their sources for scoops, and in absence of photographic documentation...I think elaborating on what is so far sketchy information of a two week vacation on Mustique is a stretch.+ Not to mention, the initial reports of the Basil's sighting were for the first week, Wednesday, I believe. Later reports now say the party was this week and various big named celebrities have been reported in attendance. It depends which source one reads which star was seen. The second week timing of the Basil's party nicely extends the Cambridge holiday speculation to two weeks. I believe less than a week used to be the average and that was to celebrate Carole's birthday and when George was the only child, if any.
Meanwhile, H&M could be there, for all we know. Might be the reason there are no pictures. anon1

I don't consider Jane's retrospective post on past W&K holidays elaboration about a possible two-week Musique vacation. I enjoy these strolls into the Cambridge past-at least at this point we have confirmation and not just speculation.

    11. In support of @Lizzie's claim of secret trips abroad, if you look at Kate (and William) at the 2018 BAFTA awards, it's clear to see that she was lightly tanned (her chest being reddish).

    12. I do think there have been times (like  the BAFTAs, thanks for the reminder Anon 4:41) when it wasn't funky lighting causing signs of a tan or if not a tan, redness from sun exposure. Kate might use a self-tanner sometimes--many women do. But I doubt Will would! (And color from sun exposure looks different from an artificial tan anyway as it tends to be uneven--lighter around the eyes, for example, from wearing sunglasses.) Also, when the family went skiing in France when Charlotte was tiny, their travel wasn't reported in the press. We likely would never have known about that trip if not for the photos released by the family upon their return. Similarly, no one saw Will or Kate traveling on the 2017 dad-dancing weekend. Will's party went to a popular tourist spot/photographers' haven and attracted some attention. But no one knew for a few weeks that Kate was also at a ski party that weekend. We all thought she was left at home with the kids. Then it came out she'd been away too at Pippa's hen party, a leak that certainly seemed to come from someone AT the party, probably to counteract the "poor Kate was deserted by Will" narrative that had developed.  Still, no sightings outed her trip going or coming or while there.

When people have the ability to travel on private jets, the ability to stay in private lux accommodations, their gov't provides security and has a vested interest in discrete travel occurring, they don't have traditional M-F jobs or co-workers to say if they are away, & money is no object, it's pretty  reasonable IMO to think vacation travel may sometimes occur without press notice! Remember we were surprised to hear Harry and Meghan had been seeing each other as often as they had when they were dating. While we had a few papped shots from transatlantic visits, it sounded like not all trips were papped. And apparently Meghan spent a lot of time in the UK without press notice meeting members of the Spencer family and the royal family.

Anyway, I don't think it makes sense to think the Cambridges hardly ever go on vacation simply because we don't see them doing it. Is it speculation? Sure, but aren't many of the ideas in our comments? (And it's also speculation to say they haven't traveled when we just don't know.)

    13. Here, here, anon1; my sentiments exactly. Maybe W&K have been in Mustique, and maybe not. I've seen no conclusive proof one way or the other. And isn't this the so-called "silly season", in royal reporting?

I also agree with your view that photographic colour overlays are liberally used; IMO, to portray whatever storyline the tabloids are bent upon portraying, and which I find very annoying--not only does this lie about whether both W&K have tans, but it distorts the shade of the clothes worn by the Duchess.

I was taught at an early age not to believe the printed word, just because it was printed. These days, even photographs lie.

    14. Thanks, JC. I think that distortion of color is most noticeable in the difference in appearance in Meghan's dress color for the christening at St James and after the short walk to Clarence House for the group photo. The photographer probably just wanted the shots to look nice but the change in color from green amongst the pastels of the other royal ladies to the more compatible tannish shade of the official photo conveniently made Meghan's dress look like she actually intended to blend in. One can't blame being outdoors for the much brighter color at the chapel--the photos there were taken in the shade of the portico, while the tannish shade was produced under bright photographic lighting.anon1

  2. I read that they were at Basil’s Bar along with Mick Jagger and possibly his young American girlfriend. Not together ... but there at the same time! For some reason I get a kick out of that!

  3. I'm glad they're able to get away without the paps chasing them down. It is a bit early on the royal calendar for such an extended vacation so I wonder if they have something in the works earlier than the rest of the family.

    1. Won't their royal calendar be different now that George is in school? I can't remember exactly when the fall term started last year but it was before late Sept.

    2. You're right, lizzie. I forgot about school schedules! Maybe because I'm in denial that I have to be back to work in August. Summer vacation gets shorter and shorter each year. Our school district had just a tick over 2 months this year. I'll bet little George feels a whole lot more confident this year when he heads back than he did last year on his first day!

    3. I expect George is more confident and probably is looking forward to school starting and seeing his friends.

Summers have shrunk! When I was young the fall term always started after Labor Day in Sept. Traditional calendar public schools around here now start in mid-August. Spring term doesn't end much earlier than it used to either but there are more breaks (extra day at Thanksgiving, MLK Day, a week-long Spring Break instead of just two days bracketing Easter weekend) and more teacher workdays sprinkled throughout the year. I guess if summers set some students' learning back, shorter summers are good but I feel for you, Robin.

    4. Ugh. I live in the southern US and we have confirmed cases of Zika & West Nile. It's hard to avoid; it's also hard to avoid "will Kate have another baby," apparently. *Eye roll*

  4. Like you, I was unsure of the accuracy of their presence at the bash since the vacation seems to have continued for over three-weeks.

  5. Wherever they have been, they must be back by now, as Prince William is due in France tomorrow for the commemoration of the centenary of the Battle of Amiens.

  6. According to the Court Circular, Prince William flew to France yesterday from RAF Marham in Norfolk and returned there after the Commemoration Service.
I guess that means the Cambridges are now in Norfolk.
