Kate Returns to Spotlight in Fresh, Casual Ensemble

Tuesday, October 2, 2018

The Duchess of Cambridge is back in action! After a summer on maternity leave with George, Charlotte and little Louis, Kate has returned this afternoon for a public engagement at the Sayers Croft Forest School and Wildlife Garden.

Although fans are always excited to see Kate, today's engagement obviously carried extra anticipation given her long sabbatical.
This debut event--Kate's return to the spotlight after her third child, but more importantly after the introduction of the Duchess of Sussex into the BRF--carried more pressure than your run-of-the-mill public engagement. Kate and Kensington Palace wisely chose an event that placed the Duchess out in a woodsy setting interacting with children, her two super strong suits.
Emily Andrews shared this sweet video (in addition to the arrival video above) of the Princess getting a welcome hug from some enthusiastic little girls:

On this event, Kate got a chance to visit with the children and participate in a number of the activities crafted to help them engage with nature.

In the below video from Rebecca English, Kate has been helping the kids make crowns with leaves. I love how the little girl on the left has a slow awakening to the press--it's intoxicating, all that attention. ;)
This outdoor project is a mental health initiative aimed at cultivating emotional wellbeing in children. Specifically, the project brings inner-city children to the recreation ground to learn about nature and get their hands dirty playing, planting, and learning about the natural world.

According to Rebecca English, Kate told children that George and Charlotte like to go on spider hunts with her in the garden for hours on end. This is both endearing horrifying to me. I think there are more than a few fans who will not emulate this particular pastime of Kate's.

A weekend or so ago I tried to "hike" a pretty tame pathway along the river near my house, and gave up almost immediately because there was poison ivy in the greenery adjacent to the walk. I headed south along a very broad and urban walkway instead. It just goes to show that Kate is the real deal. She doesn't just talk the talk. :) As always, events with children give us peeks into the private life she enjoys with her own little ones when off duty.
Kate's ensemble today is fresh and fabulous. We've talked a lot about whether Meghan's introduction to the family would have an impact on Kate's style, and I have been of the opinion from the get-go that (as is generally the case when fashionable ladies orbit in the same sphere) their fashion choices will spur each other to step out and experiment a little.

Today Kate mixed some old favorites with new pieces for an ensemble that certainly shows some gentle evolution. [Update: one of you very diplomatically :) asked in the comments if I would elaborate on this, and I see I didn't really explain why I made this comment. I've added the thoughts in bold in the next paragraph]. Kate wore her Zara biker trousers, which I have affectionally named her Pangolin Pants. We first saw them tour in India in 2016, and they have been recycled since.

She paired the khakis with her trusty Penelope Chilvers boots, but added a new Fjallraven "Stina" jacket... I think this coat added the twist. It was more streamlined and a little "hipper' than her Barbours or even her recent Troy London. I think she put together a casual ensemble (true to her style, certainly), but probably with an eye to a lightly more modern silhouette. Barbour and the Troy London parka will undoubtedly get plenty of airtime in the future, but given the extra pressure to make a great come-back, I suspect she made a deliberate choice to freshen up her usual look with this lighter, shorter jacket.

...and layered that over the 脰vik Re-Wool Sweater W from the same label (IDed by Christin Zi)...

...and a perky bud-print blouse by JOSEPH, IDed by Laura. It is Laura's first Kate ID, so it is a doubly exciting day for her!

Kate finished her look off with her Monica Vinader "Siren Wire" earrings and a new haircut with new, almost blond highlights! I was rooting for Kate to keep her hair long, but she hasn't gone too, too short here, plus she clearly got a great blow-out with her signature waves, which makes her look like a hundred bucks.

KP
Kate is clearly a very disciplined woman. After a summer in which she obviously chose to relax and enjoy her family rather than be strict with herself, she clearly kicked her fitness regimen into high gear as fall approached, returning today back to what appears to be her pre-baby figure.

In a podcast before the summer holiday, Emily Andrews discussed how Kate has been spotted in the past hiking the hills around her country home wearing light ankle weights. We have seen pictures of her practicing what appears to be Pilates or Yoga, and of course, Kate has been known to be a careful eater for many years. She certainly looked fit and glowing today on a return to the spotlight that I felt was a huge success.

KP
Kate already has her next event on the calendar. Kensington Palace announced:
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will attend the first Global Ministerial Mental Health Summit on Tuesday 9th October. #GlobalMHSummit will see political figures, academics and policy-makers from around the world come together with one common goal: better mental health for all.
See you soon!

  1. I love this!! She looks so great. This is the perfect event. The sweet little girls hugging her, the sweet little girl slowly smiling and waving at the cameras, the sweet little scene of Kate bug-hunting. I just love all it. Her hair really looks fantastic, and she looks happy and healthy. So nice to see her again.

  2. Ah, Kate is back and all is right with the world again. Not really but it sure felt like it while reading this delightful post. What a cozy comeback engagement this is. The kids are so cute and the video of the press struck girl is too funnny.

Jane, I agree with your thinking behind the nature of this first engagement as well as her clothing choices. She does look incredible although I still do not like these trousers. Her hair is amazing today and very glad she did not go down the path of the dreaded fringe this time.

  3. I love it too. Perfect event to return from mat leave. Kate really rocks the English country look with her amazing figure, lush hair and gorgeous skin. Her clothes, IMO, are always a subtle, flattering frame that allow her natural beauty to shine.

Welcome back Kate! I love the English country look, and Kate rocks it. I was inspired by Kate and bought myself some wellies, all I need now is a rose 馃尮 garden and one of those Khaki jackets ..馃Д 馃榾 I’m looking forward to the next mental health engagement with William by her side.

  5. The hair looks fabulous. I love the lighter highlights with her coloring.
I don’t know how she gets the Zara pants in a longer length. I am the same height as she and they hit way above the ankle and I’m not high waisted (just tall).

    1. I think this may highlight just how long-waisted Kate is - I generally pay attention bc my proportions are the exact opposite so I’m quite jealous. But her height is in her torso, not her legs.

      Delete
    2. Do i understand correctly, you have long legs but you are jealous of a long torso? I am just wondering since normally everyone loves to have long legs!

      Delete
    3. Either way, those of us whose shapes aren't "balanced" sometimes have trouble buying "off the rack." Short-waisted--trousers are often too short both in crotch length and overall length and some styles of jackets look long and droopy. Long-waisted---trousers may be too long overall (easily fixed at home) but too long in the crotch can't be fixed and isn't a good look! Also dresses with any kind of defined or nipped-in waist fit like "empire" styles or look like something we outgrew during a teenage growth spurt (impossible to fix.) I have the latter build so I like seeing how Kate deals with it although I really have never liked these trousers. Love the boots though!

I like Kate's current hair alot. I do hope she doesn't let the highlights go too red. I don't think that shade is flattering on her. I think this "medium long" is a good length though.

  6. She always dresses just perfectly for every engagement and so lovely with the little ones.
You can just imagine her with her own little ones .
Strange how very little ones like the things we really hate.

  8. So happy to have our Kate back! I echo the many sentiments here today- she looks fabulous and glowing. It's a great engagement to ease back into the spotlight- she has something to do, she doesn't have to look like a fashion plate (although she often does)and she can go home and tell the kids what mommy did today without them getting too bored! She doesn't have to change to pick them up from school!!!

  9. Beautiful Kate! Love the top half, still don’t like these pants (my teen girls have leggings like these that they wear long sweaters and sweatshirts with. So it’s not that I don’t like this style pant, they just don’t look super appropriate for a Princess). Just my two cents.

She must definitley work at being healthy and trim, but something tells me the Middleton girls inherited some amazing genes, too. 馃槈

    So happy she’s back!!

    1. I've always called these her "armadillo pants" because of those knees. Then I tried a pair on while looking for something comfortable to wear on an overseas flight and they are comfy! Mine are black though so the armadillo effect is minimized. However, I can see why she likes them for the kind of stooping down and digging in the dirt outdoors with the kids at this engagement. She would look silly in nice trousers and ballet flats for a walk in the woods. I know HM would still be in a dress with handbag in tow but it's not the hands on approach of the newer generation and that sweet little spontaneous hug would not have happened.

I agree with you 100% that those Middleton ladies have some very good genes! Carole looks fantastic!

I love this look, and am so glad that Kate is back! Kate looks fantastic. I think that this event and the clothing were chosen on purpose, by Kate. It's a classic English country look, and is quintessential Kate, and quintessentially English. I feel like this is a stark (and purposeful) contrast to the uber expensive, Hollywood looks that Meghan's been going for.

    I LOVE Kate's new highlights!!

And LOL, spider hunting is not something I would have expected of Kate, but it is endearing, and sweet to hear about these little anecdotes. Can't wait to see her again soon!

  11. So happy to have Kate back! I love this outfit, and I'm happy to see these pants again - they're one of the only "Kate" pieces I own. I snatched them up as soon as I saw that they were actually affordable! I know Kate must have had a wonderful summer off, but I hope she's as happy to be back as we are to have her back!

  12. She looks lovely, fit and trim as always, with enviable luscious locks and demonstrating her wonderful way with people. As a woman in her 40s, I do recommend that anyone in their 30s use retinol with discipline in the evening and make sure sunscreen is your best bud, all rounded by always moisturizing (and yes, this is a not so roundabout way of saying HRH should, too). 1. I was just thinking about sunscreen and tanning too, Sylvia! I don't mean to admonish Kate, but I've always found her (and Carole and Pippa's) penchant for suntanning difficult to understand. It always comes back to bite you down the line, with lines, wrinkles, discoloration, and all around unhealthier skin. If I were her I would be thinking about laying off the sunbathing, but hey, it's her skin!

  21. Hi Jane: I was curious if there is a specific element of today’s ensemble that stood out as something Kate may be experimenting with? 2. Thanks for the additional insight! I definitely agree with your observations after a second look. The jacket is a departure from a more classic/country look we have seen. I wouldn’t mind one myself. :-) Cheers!

    3. I hadn't got the point of the jacket at first. Even now, I can't forget my first impression. Kate was refreshingly herself, in a gorgeous country look. It didn't seem to me she felt any kind of pressure, post baby or due to the arrival of her sister in-law. She seems very comfortable in her own skin and in her old clothes. I don't see the influence of the new family member , unless...I don't think it was intentional at all but she gave Meghan a masterclass in dressing for the occasion. After the outcry over Meghan's wardrobe cost, her old boots were PR genius. But as I say, I am sure she didn't do it on purpose to show how it is done. She just oozes natural elegance.

  22. It's interesting to see how people are reacting to her return! It's nice to see
Also I agree with you with this engagement being the first one of her end of the maternity leave
October is going to be full with major events, so instead of starting with something huge, she began with something nice and easy and that she feels 10000% comfortable with
It is also an event where she and her clothes would not become 1000% the focus of the day, bur rather the even itself and the kids are more than enough to balance her
    :)

  25. Kate looks absolutely stunning and I love the highlights (or lo-lights?). I have dark hair and light skin similar to kate, and I highlighted my hair shortly after childbirth as I felt it softened my post-baby look of heavy bags and incredibly washed-out pale skin (me, not beautiful kate)!

I am not a fan of this color scheme (olive shades + brown tones)..something sharper like black skinnies would have popped imo. I wonder if kate will be making an extra effort to recycle old outfits and wear more affordable outfits, in light of all the backlash meghan has received for her wardrobe costs? I know she generally does, but wondering if it will be even more so for the near future..

  26. love that Kate's back very excited so glad she wore her hair down and took an appropriate amount of leave that she needs and deserves has do all mothers. Love her hair down its a great improvement from the ugly buns but hate the length the long hair was so much better shes not old and just because she a mom doesn't mean she cant have long beautiful hair she should. Love her long hair and hopefully it will come back very soon like by the next engagement or princess Eugenie's wedding. The bottom half of her outfit is great love the pants and boots perfect shes a young beautiful thin princess and should dress accordingly. These pants proved shes bounced back good on her. Now the top half of her outfit I hate it's dull, boring, etc. I probably should like ti better if it fit it's 3 sixes to big and after finding out its a Swedish brand its defiantly something she purchased and wore during pregnancy and out grew before the tour. it looks way to big also it looks old and raggedy which I hate we couldn't spring for some new clothes that actually fit her and showcase her beautiful pre-baby figure. I'm sorry but it looks to casual, old, raggedy, and unfinished. It looks like something my grandmother would wear to walk the dog in not something a young, fashionable, beautiful, princess, should wear on engagement. she could have kept the boots and pants and just wore a nice new coat from Katherine Hooker or Real Wild Clothing Company. Still casual and appropriate but more princess polished and formal like she should be on engagement. I feel like this push to make Kate look old, mummsy and unfashionable from place and her own staff has been going on a while and needs to stop. there needs to be a reshuffling of staff and a firing of the hairdresser and fake stylist. Kate should go back to picking her own clothes and looking like the beautiful young glamorous princess she is with long gorgeous hair perfectly styled. this needs to happen asap. My other complaint is that the engagement comes the day of Williams return were shes been having 8 or 9 nights of complete chaos, unrest, and no sleep. It's totally poor planning on the place staffs part which I feel was done on purpose by certain staff members just to emphasize certain ideas they have. Yes Kate has part time or sometime help but buck starts and stops with her shes very hands on mother and believe me that nanny only works 4 hours a day if any shes not helping her all day everyday or all night Kate's the one who is up all night with the baby, picking up kids, cooking, playing, doing homework, and so much more. I think its really rude to do an engagement this way and further more certain place staff did it on purpose just to reinforce there agenda which is totally false and fake that Kate's a tired, old, and frumpy which is totally untrue but they try to make it so by making her wear, old, ugly, weird, frumpy, and un-stylish clothes. they make her cut of all her beautiful glamorous gorgeous hair in to an ugly old lady bob and make her wear those ugly weird old bun things. They made her stop wearing her eyeliner which looked so much better then this weird no eyeliner or just on the top lid which looks awful and that makes you look tired when you wear it like that. they make her wear those ugly old lady pointed toe shoes that are awful.this as been going on since she first joined but lately it really as gone to far and needs to stop. Megan is older then her so why is there a double standard its ridiculous Princess Kate needs to go back to being her true glamorous beautiful self outside just as she is in.

I wasn't a huge fan of the " Fringe " but off with the dead ends,a pop of color, and some layers = gorgeous!! As far as her outfit she blended in with her surroundings. I know about the absurd rule not allowing ladies of the Royal family not taking a coat of in public but it can't be that cold right now it's it?? All in all she's back and looks great!! Can't wait for a tiara event!! COULD SOMEONE ANSWER THE REASON THAT PRINCESS DIANA WORE A TIARA FAR MORE THAN KATE??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Diana had a lot more "white tie" engagements since she was Princess of Wales during her marriage. Charles had and continues to have a lot more white tie events than William because he is Prince of Wales. When things shift and William is first in line to the throne, we will probably see more events that call for a tiara.

      Delete
    2. True that Catherine might have more very formal events when William becomes the immediate heir, but inevitably at present there are very much fewer tiara events now than there were in the earlier years of HM reign. The Queen was in her late 50's early sixties when Diana first entered the Royal family.
Charles could be in or near his eighties when he inherits, so might have little taste for the formal events.

  32. In general, given the venue, this outfit, with its several pieces, wins my approval. One thumb up, but not two. The best "parts" of this look include the colours--I'm a sucker for light brown and subtle olive green, when worn together; I really like the cut, length and colour of Kate's hair; I liked the choice of venue--kids and country--right up Kate's alley.

But not two, and here's why. Those boots Kate was wearing were over a decade old, and have been seen many times before; the toe, whilst comfortable in shape, puts me in mind of a construction worker's boot. I wouldn't throw these boots out, but I would slot them for private use only; I would prefer to see Kate in a new pair of expensive brown leather hiking boots. Secondly, the shape/type of the pants/trousers Kate was wearing, skinny jeans, are no longer fashionable, thank god! For the life of me, I can't think of these as either healthy or hygienic, and would've preferred to see them replaced with full-length tapered or stovepipe jeans. (However, these skinny jeans did serve to show us that Kate had regained her figure.) Lastly, I truly dislike those cheap-looking earrings Kate wore; I'd love to see them replaced by a pair of medium-priced pearl studs or either small yellow or white hoop earrings.

I am, however, indeed pleased to see Kate out-and-about, nor do I see any reason to keep her under wraps, as I think Charles plans to do, limiting her to occasional engagements, thereby encouraging the tag: "workshy". Anything to bury what he seems to view as the opposition.

  33. Kate looks gorgeous and she looks just like what she is - the quintessential English country girl. It looks good on her because it is so natural. I don't think she needs to try to be anything she isn't comfortable with because she's pretty dang good at what she does. She will always understand the British people and their way of doing things because she's one of them. Meghan will learn in time but her formal stiffness needs to relax just a bit and that's a bit weird because, as a fellow Californian, nobody has ever claimed we weren't relaxed! lol

People imagining cat fights and secret battles (that don’t exist) based purely on photos in gossip magazines! 馃槱

    2. I didn't see anyone making comments about cat fights and such but there is that one truly disturbing comment that Jane has handled well. Whoa.

I don't have a problem with people making general comparisons about their style because they are different and I don't think either one of them has to conform to the other's style. Kate is tall and willowy and Meghan is short and petite so they really can't wear the same things the same way. I do have a problem with people thinking we're disparaging one just because we like something the other did better. It's just an observation unless it's said in a nasty way.

    3. I agree Robin. Praising one of them is sometimes seen as disparaging the other. And it makes sense in a way. For they are in many aspects almost symmetrical opposites. It really interesting.

    4. And I agree, too. I was referring to the super negative comment earlier and how comments like those (vitriolic at either Kate or Meghan) are becoming far too common. Hate that Jane’s beautiful blog received one. Sorry if I did not make sense.

  37. So happy to see her back!
I thought she looked stunning. Simply gorgeous.
I liked the colors. I thought they were perfect for the event and venue.
I have to agree about the boots being dated, cute hiking boots would look better IMO.
I'm not crazy about those pants either. The knees are weird.
She's so beautiful though, everything looks good on her.

  38. I'm not clear as to what Jane was referring to above, re: Meghan Markle. Kate has worn those exact shoes for over a decade, the pants multiple times, and similar khaki/brown jackets for years also.

I really really doubt that we are going to see huge style-related changes in Kate simply because of a new member of the BRF. Remember, Kate almost did not wear any local designers on her state tours of Canada, Australia, and NZ. These are huge occasions and widely photographed as well. Kate could have easily bought an extra dress or jacket on these occasions and didn't, but now the presence of Megan will "spur on [Kate] to step out" of her favourites?

Sorry to have a negative seeming comment, I love the post and usually think Jane's commentary is on-the-mark. But I really don't think it is accurate here. Perhaps I have just being seeing lots of blogs lately suggesting Kate will switch up her look with return to duty! Frankly I think it is just long-term fans who want to see her out of jeans now....

You can see him in one of the photos about half way down the DM's article:

    6. I thought I saw him in one of the pictures, but I was in a hurry and didn't go back to check. I suspect he is one of their best PPOs, and possibly particularly good with crowds. My bet is he will go with the Sussexes on tour. He is a very aggressive (in a good way) crowd manager, and they will need very tight security. Obviously, I hope that he hasn't been permanently moved from Kate's detail, but maybe we will see him move around as needed and as the individual events dictate. Not every event poses the same risks, etc.

  40. Glad to see Kate back! I think her outfit was appropriate to the occasion, a wonderful, outdoorsy adventure with children.
I am so amazed at the negativity towards Meghan, though. It might be good to remember that Meghan comes to the Royal Family with a background as an American actress, polar opposites, I'd say. Meghan has been making a seriously, hard-working effort to fit in to her new role. If Harry and his family are happy and supportive, can we not be?
For example, Meghan has been working quietly, behind the scenes for the last nine months, to assist with the cookbook supporting the recent high-rise fire victims. She, Harry and her mother did a wonderful job on the luncheon to launch the book. Quite an accomplishment right out of the starting gate!
    Just saying!

  42. So delightful to see Kate. Her outfit was so cute and must comment....those leather boots are so exquisite....check out the Penelope Chilvers website......these are the rolls Royce of boots! Bravo to Kate for wearing them on these appropriate occasions. Keep on keeping on Kate. People making comments need to not be so critical of Kate wearing something more than one time. If you mad ethe investment on an expensive pair of boots....everyone would wear many times over. I adore the hair cute it was so fresh & attractive. Thanks again for your wonderful blog.

  44. As a mother I would like to add a little comment to your wonderful post, Jane. Taking care of 3 young children - one of them a toddler, and one a baby is the hardest, most exhausting (and rewarding, yes) job on this planet. Ask any mom :-) So the words 'sabbatical' and 'relax' made me chuckle a bit... Going to work can often feel like a day off haha! Having said this, I'm also glad to see Kate again, and her usual style, and her new haircut. She looks great!

  46. On a strictly fashion-related note, it has always been my belief that Kate is well aware of Diana's popularity and her impact on the RF (as in ruffled feathers) and she (Kate) has been keen to avoid being seen as a clothes horse or someone who is courting the press and looking for attention.

Naturally, Kate steps it up for the more formal occasions, but she has had no problem recycling or wearing high street. Kate is well aware of the history of the Firm and it shows on many levels. It's also clear that she does not feel the need to be controlled by fashion trends and she remains true to herself. She has a penchant for vintage looks and we saw evidence of this even before she became a member of the RF.

For these reasons, it is my belief that Kate will not change her approach because Meghan has joined the Firm. As a matter of fact, I think it will make Kate even more determined to avoid being seen as competing.

I like to think of the royals in runner's terms. There is a sprinter or two who look good in the short-term but soon burn out if faced with the long haul. (Margaret Rose?) William, Kate, and the Queen are distance runners. They know/knew what's ahead and they pace themselves.

      Delete
    3. I agree, royalfan. I don't think Kate will change anything for all the reasons you stated. Also because she dresses for the occasion, not to make a fashion statement. She is very good at it, and by now very at ease with the many unspoken codes. She also dresses to look pretty IMO, and knows what suits her, shapes, colours... She doesn't need to copy anyone.

    2. Apparently, Eugenie's wedding plan is following aspects of both Pippa's and Harry's. The details are being parceled out;I assume to build interest. The carriage route, the flowers, the cake, the celebrity attendees, the charity attendees. I think Sophie and Autumn originally set the standard for modern Windsor royal weddings.
Why do I have the feeling that Jack and Eugenie themselves would be perfectly happy with a quiet beach wedding?
Now, who won't be there. With Sarah one of the stars of the show, I was curious who would opt out. Some of the fringe royals will attend if only for a chance in the royal spotlight. Some royals will attend for Eugenie's sake. I'm just going to say--Harvest comes around every year but the wedding of one of only two of Charles's eligible, unwed royal nieces, hopefully-once in a lifetime.

I like royal wedding "pomp and circumstance" (MM's words about W&C's wedding per an interview transcript) so I am also anticipating Eugenie's wedding. However, what intrigues me more is the human interaction and PR posturing associated with them. The antics of the children. Facial expressions caught unaware. One of my favorite moments of the last royal wedding was the varied facial expressions on the Mother of the Bride. More priceless than the Bride's tiara.

PS Can you tell I've been keeping up with Royal Central? Ha!

    3. I don't get the impression Eugenie and Jack are the beach wedding type. More the traditional country church type.

    4. Speaking of tiaras...
tomorrow Kate begins a busy week of appearances. William even more so with both the mental health and illegal wildlife trafficking events in London. He is giving a key-note speech.
Just for today could we discuss Eugenie's choice of tiara? The one Sarah wore after the ceremony? A new one or a loan from HM's collection? Or none at all, emulating her Mother's initial wedding appearance. Of course, Eugenie starts off the wedding as a royal, while Sarah became one after the ceremony.
I'm guessing a tiara. Too bad grooms don't have some symbolic emblem of royalhood. Jack will soon be royal.

Question: do married-in royals get the royal designation because of the presumption that their blood will be mixed with that of future royal off-spring? Otherwise, becoming royal by the mere act of marrying a royal seems illogical to me. On the other hand, many illegitimate off-spring with royal blood are not given royal status.

Maybe that is just part of the mystery of royalty. Ha!

I guess it was obvious that I wrote that earlier Anonymous comment. I forgot to sign it. anon1

    5. I believe Sarah covered her tiara with flowers and then removed them after the ceremony.

Regarding Eugenie's wedding … I see nothing less than as formal a royal wedding as she qualifies for. And I'm not suggesting that Eugenie wants this for herself, but I do believe that it's extremely important to A&S; they are very protective of their daughters' rank in the Firm. I also suspect that both Eugenie (and Beatrice) will use their wedding day as an opportunity to honor their mother as much as possible. I will be shocked if Eugenie doesn't wear Sarah's tiara, for starters. Has she made other choices to echo A&S's wedding day? We shall see.

I've also read that Camilla will not attend the wedding because she has a prior commitment and it makes me wonder if this is a "diplomatic absence". Charles and Andrew have not had the smoothest of relationships and Charles had been able to negotiate his private life as he has wished. Andrew's path, on the other hand, has not been as smooth...…….. Just my two cents.

    6. anon1, reports are that Jack will not be getting a title and will remain a commoner after the wedding.

    7. royalfan--my reply was etherized. Hope this isn't a repeat.
I think we generally agree in these wedding-related comments, royalfan. We both spoke of "honoring" Sarah.
I looked it up--the tiara Sarah wore was indeed under the flowers.(She did look a bit top-heavy to me.) As I said, she changed to the tiara during the registry portion.Sarah made no explanations herself that I could find about why she covered the tiara with flowers. There were various attempts at guessing: gardenias are Andrew's favorite-she wore to honor him; the gardenias were to match the flowers in her bouquet. My thoughts? A hairdresser generally is required to properly position a tiara without making a rat's nest out of a hair-do, a poufy one at that. With a veil and train also involved and time a factor, I would imagine that someone had the brilliant idea-"Why not apply the tiara ahead and then just cover it for the ceremony? "Then, "What to cover it with?" Gardenias seemed like a good bet and there was precedent for a royal bride's wearing flowers in her hair. All sources agreed, however, that wearing the tiara after the ceremony symbolized her having entered the royal family. I think it would follow, then, wearing flowers instead of a tiara before symbolized her not yet being royal- a commoner. I don't know if the emphasis was meant to be that she started as a humble commoner or that she ended as a privileged royal. Perhaps the flower covering could be viewed as a sort of cocoon that she shed and the tiara the metamorphosis into a butterfly. :+)
      .
I assume Camilla is still at her bolt hole Birkhall in Scotland, as the engagement that will take her away from the wedding is in Scotland--a Harvest Festival. A previous commitment requires the Duke of Kent to miss the reception hosted by the Queen but he apparently will attend the noon ceremony. I would think if Camilla were in London now she could attend at least one part of the festivities. And there is the helicopter.

Anon 8:06--True, Jack and Eugenie will not get a title from the Queen upon their marriage as the sons and the respective wives of the heir did. I don't pretend to understand this completely. I would think spouses of grandchildren rate as highly as highly as spouses of cousins. ("Princess Michael")" Prince Eugenie" would seem odd applied to Jack, however. Ha!.

I was referring to royal status in my previous comment. I don't believe I mentioned titles. Jack will certainly become a royal with this marriage--a member of the royal family. His father-in-law to be is a son of the Queen. His children, HM's great-grandchildren. Some time ago I conjectured about the York title situation. Is Andrew's title inheritable (it is) and if so, could a female now inherit it. At any rate, it would be Beatrice, not Eugenie.
I personally think this couple would be great as a team representing the Queen. Surely, with the cousins aging out all hands will be on deck, despite rumored plans for "down-sizing." (which I always thought of more as consolidation of power).

    8. Anon1, top heavy is an accurate description of the flowers that covered Sarah's tiara. Perhaps the thought behind it was more flattering and thoughtful than the result.....

I'm looking forward to Eugenie's wedding and I truly hope it will be HER day. And I'll leave it at that for now. (To be continued if it looks like 1986 all over again.) 馃槉

  48. Anon1, My guess is she'll wear her mother's tiara (unless Sarah hasn't hung on to it but I expect she has.) Eugenie's engagement ring is similar to Sarah's and when it comes down to it, I think Eugenie is kind of traditional. It's possible she and Jack might have preferred a lower-key wedding but like Anon 11:47, I don't know that she's a beach wedding kind of gal. While she was baptised in London, she was raised in Windsor so she is marrying at her "home church."
    That's pretty traditional.

Did Sarah change into the tiara after her wedding? All these years I thought the flower crown was removed when the couple went into the room to sign the registry but she had the tiara on underneath.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Lizzie and Anonymous-I actually used the term" beach wedding" somewhat facetiously to represent a simpler ceremony. Eugenie has seemed like a modest, nonattention-seeking person to me. I don't think she is as insistent on royal status and perks as her Father or sister may be. I have no idea how I came up with that impression.

I thought I read somewhere that Sarah had changed to the tiara during the registry part behind the scenes. Wearing a flower crown and top of that tiara seems like it would be rather awkward. If she did have the tiara on underneath I imagine it was for expediency. Her recognition that she came to the marriage as a commoner was clear. Queen Victoria wore flowers, I believe.

By the way--crazy idea but one I love...Sarah and Andrew married before their daughter's wedding. However, Phillip still lives. (Will he attend? ) And I do think Eugenie would choose to honor her Mother by wearing her wedding tiara. I'm just not sure how much input the couple have had.

I have never been a major Sarah fan, but on Eugenie's wedding day I think PP could/should attend his granddaughter's wedding and keep it as tension free as possible. It's the bride (and groom's) day after all and I cannot think of a better "gift" for the couple.

She is used to the ceremony, likes tradition, and being sociable and friendly, she wished to invite a lot of people. I think the choice was hers and reflects her, it does seem natural somehow.11:47
