"Sneak Peek" Kate Wears Favorite JP at Tusk Conservation Awards

Thursday, November 8, 2018

I think if I could pick one evening gown to see Kate recycle, this would be it. This stunning dress has been my favorite evening gown since Kate debuted it in her show-stopping first year or so as a royal. Yes, tonight at the Tusk Conservation Awards, Kate has recycled the turquoise Jenny Packham gown she first debuted at "Our Greatest Team Rises" Olympic gala evening in 2012.

Kate is looking so super fabulous. Several of you have mentioned it, but taking that extra time this summer certainly has suited her.

This is a picture the back of the back of her dress from the first wear. That was back when Kate almost never wore her hair up! :)

I will do a full post later tonight, but what a thrill to see this old favorite get a second run. I might squeeze in some Pilates before my event tonight. Good heavens, it's like 2012 again. ;)

    1. I feel the same way Kiwi Gal ! Kate looks like a goddess. Her grace and beauty are just magnificent. I am very glad that she recycled this time around and I hope that she will continue to pull one old thing after the other from her closet, just to show that you don't need to drop $$$ to stand out from a crowd.

  2. I have been hoping to see this dress again! Kate looks amazing! I think I prefer this dress with her hair up to better see the detail of the dress and her earrings but I'll take it in order to see one of my favorites!

Yay, I'm so happy she wore this dress again! I just adore the colour, the lace details, everything. In fact, this and the strapless black velvet are my two favourite dresses Kate has ever worn (her wedding dress doesn't count, that has its own category) and I was so hoping to see herin it again. I hope we will also get a picture or two of the gorgeous lace back again, though I haven't seen any yet. It is amazing how she is in exactly the same shape as she was 6 years and 3 children ago!
The only teeny tiny thing I would change here is wearing her hair up to really show off all the beautiful details of the dress ;)

  5. Thrilled to see this stunning dress again! She looks incredible and I prefer this ensemble to the 2012 appearance. I think the neckline really flatters her and shows that even though her role as a senior royal is ramping up, she can still bring the signature Kate glam! I also appreciate that she recycled for a conservation event. Since this blog is a community where we discuss how fashion plays a critical role in royal life, I hope I don't get jumped on for saying this: while Meghan's Oscar de la Renta number in Australia was BEYOND, it wasn't quite appropriate for a conservation event. With the fashion world at their disposal, I think it's important for all of the royals to keep their messaging consistent with the causes they support.

    1. I like this gown better this time around too. Unlike others, I thought it very busy and slightly too twee between the pleated skirt, all the embellished lace detail, the scalloped cap sleeves, the raised neck and the flat bow in the back. This time with her hair down, only some of those design elements are visible and I think it looks better, more grownup.

I'm glad she's attending tonight. I think it would be nice if she could go annually.

    2. I like it better this time too. I wasn't wild about the dress itself before (too many busy details as you said Faith) but I thought the color was gorgeous on Kate so I hoped to see it again. With her hair down the focus is more on Kate the person than on all the dress's details and I like that better.

    3. Great point both of you, articulating why I like it better this time!

    4. Lizzie, the color is gorgeous on her, and I agree that we see Kate first tonight instead of the dress.

    5. I like both versions. She looks amazing. I wish she would go back to that kind of updo. It was beautiful and I prefer it to the one she is sporting lately.

    1. Even a half updo would show off the poppy better, which is a shame!

    2. I think she fills out the dress a bit more now & think it looks great! I agree her hair up would show off the back of the dress but we've seen it before and tonight's look is divine

    3. The hair moves and it doesn't always lay in the same place on her shoulder. The fact that we can see there is a poppy there proves that. If she didn't wear one the media would have a field day. Besides, it's the right thing to do.

      Delete
    4. One wears a poppy as a gesture of respect to the Fallen. Not for it to be seen.

      Delete
    5. how do you know she is wearing a poppy if you can't see it? ;+)
Seriously, though. She usually tries to vary her look each wearing of a garment to distinguish one event appearance from another.
I had a thought that maybe Kate sees the wearing of a poppy as a more personal, private remembrance, as her family suffered such great loss in the War. Three sons--all of them. None left.

She may think highlighting it a form of saying, "Look how patriotic I am!" She had the RFO for at least a year without the news being "leaked." Just a thought.
I AM already tired of reading hair up/down remarks.

    6. She is maybe a bit fuller then in 2012, but I think the different fit comes rather from minor changes in waist/hip/bust proportions. What time and babies do to us is most visible when repeating clothes. My clothes pre-pregnancies also all fit easily, but i often think that somehow something is different, but i cant point out what.

    7. To be honest, I do wish she had worn her hair up because the back of the gown is beautiful, but I agree with Anon1 that Kate tries to refresh her recycles in some way.

  10. What a perfect re-wear! She is in full on princess/duchess mode these days and she's nailing it! I don't mind the hair down because it's nice that she changes things up on a recycle. Just lovely.

  13. So exciting to see Kate wear this lovely teal dress. Kate has so many beautiful dresses, she should wear as often as she likes. I am sometimes amazed as writers use the word recycle for famous people wearing their clothing more than once time. As most of us wear our dresses on more than one occasion. I guess the word recycle is on trend for “wearing clothing more than once. Fabulous Kate! Gorgeous color on her.

    1. I agree. I am not sure if recycle is the right word but it sure seems to have stuck. When it comes to outfits my idea of recycle only applies to big ticket events. If she wears a gown again, yes its a recycle but a jcrew top is just regular re-wearing. People are supposed to wear clothes more than once except when they are clothes you buy for a wedding or a christening etc. My cousin is getting married next year and I was talking to my SIL about what we would wear. When I told her I was thinking of wearing the outfit I wore once to my sister's wedding 10 years ago, I got a gasp and a 'you are going to recycle'. It got me a chuckle and made me feel close to Kate. lol

  14. I like it with this hair! We can still see the back and it makes the outfit somehow different. She looks fantastic! I really love this type of skirts that move beautifully as she walks❤️ In some pictures her legs can be perceived and omg, I wish I had those legs!

  15. WOW! Just wow! To say she looks amazing is an understatement. To me she is one of the world's most beautiful women - classic elegance and style, she seems to radiate from within. And that gown! Awesome!

  16. She looks fantastic and a recycle for this event is so very Kate. It's a statement worthy of Princess Anne.

  17. Loved it last time and am so happy to see Kate wear it again. Beautiful gown, stunning colour on Kate. And her hair! Her posture is amazing - it's as though she is floating along with William at her side. No clinging or PDA thank goodness ;-D

    1. Now that you mention it, yes it does.
      How do you "unpleat" something?
      Still a beautiful dress.

    2. Could be how it was pressed or have something to do with how it's been stored since the first wearing. I'm not sure I see it as less pleated myself though. I think the lighting is just different.

  19. Kate looks amazing lately, and it was nice to see this dress again.

Can't help but think her rewearing this is maybe also a bit of a subtle message about Meghan spending in two weeks for her tour on clothes what Kate spends in an entire year. She got a LOT of flack for doing that, seems to me Kate is signaling she'll be thriftier. I heartily approve.

I totally agree that this is a subtle statement of shopping her closet and not having to have a new $10k dress for every event.

    2. I was curious how many times Kate has reworn an outfit, as it feels like the majority of her outfits have only been seen once. Here is an interesting article that lists all of the repeats- it doesn’t include this rewear of the Jenny Packham dress. It looks like there are 30+ outfits that have been reworn (more, if this article has left some out).

    3. I scanned the HB photos quickly and it does not include every recycle. And we should also remember that Kate wore a lot of High Street clothing and even wore clothing from her single days. Of course she wears Alexander McQueen when it's appropriate, but for a woman in her position and with her resources, she has gone out of her way to NOT make it about her clothes. Additional evidence of this is her wearing *another* [fill in the blank] dress/gown/shoes, etc.

      Delete
    4. Interesting article -- I had forgotten some of them. The article is from 2016, so it makes sense that yesterday's recycle isn't included.

    5. She recycles a lot, it is very noticeable with evening wear.

      Delete
    6. Kate got plenty of flack in her early years too despite her high street ensembles. It takes a while to build a closet of evening gowns to the point one can shop it for recycles. Considering they were at a conservation dinner I believe any pointed message sent by her recycle would be on that theme rather than a jab at Meghan. Kate's not that petty.

      Delete
    7. I think she knew a re-wear would be a hit and many loved the dress. Kate seems to not need to "dig" a pregnant woman in her family or anyone for that matter.

      Delete
    8. Interesting article but definitely missing some re-wears. The green Hobbs coat, the green Emelia Wickstead coat, and I suspect that there have been several re-wears of dresses under the various coats.

I don't think Kate is in the business of proving anything to The Duchess of Sussex. I think the combination of recycling for an event on conservation and of trying not to create anything for the press to speculate about or focus on regarding she and William could be behind the choice of this dress. It's a favorite of everyone and it had been awhile. Her body is in fantastic pre-baby shape and her confidence level seems to be at an all-time high. She doesn't need to prove anything. She's in it for the long haul and knows what is appropriate for her position and for the events she attends. She's a pro. And, as much as I adored Diana, Kate is also not erring on the things The Princess of Wales was criticized for. Too many clothes and that's what you're known for instead of your charities. Like I said, Kate's a pro.

    9. I do agree with you, Robin, and I can't help but wonder how much of that was done in hopes of having Charles' approval. And, once it was clear that she (Diana) would never have it, she started to dress for her own satisfaction.

I, too, see Kate as a confident young woman. She doesn't get ruffled easily and stays true to herself while being fully committed to her husband, children and royal duties.

    10. Guys, read my actual comment. I said message *about*. Not "message to", or "jab at", or "dig at". C'mon, the criticism of Meghan's spending was *everywhere!*. And honestly well-deserved. I'm sure Kate was aware about it. And she knows her rewears are covered and approved of. It was definitely a subtle message to the public about how she will approach her closet, in contrast.

And for those saying Meghan's closet isn't as big so she's stocking it, I don't remember Kate spending as much per outfit as Meghan has been. Also keep in mind many, if not all, of Meghan's new clothes will fit *very* differently post-baby and they might become unwearable. Kate carried mostly in front with her kids, but Meghan is definitely filling out everywhere already (not an insult, people just carry differently).

And Robin, I disagree. A pretty Hollywood actress shows up and Kate's suddenly in the best shape she's been in since her wedding, despite just having a baby? That's not coincidence. She's a firstborn, we're competitive. She'll be a queen some day, she wants to make sure she looks great next to Meghan. It's definitely on purpose.

Nice to see HM supporting Kate's higher rank, however. Jewelry loans, family order, riding with her in cars, etc. The Queen is also definitely sending a message about Kate's position in the family, and I love it. People forget Harry is only sixth in line.

    11. I also meant to add that I'm curious what the relationship between the D of C and D of S is these days. Supposedly they were friendly but not super-close to begin with, and there was recently a rumor of Kate clashing with Meghan over how the latter was treating staff (I'm guessing at their Kensington Palace office). Maybe it's just hearsay, but considering Harry and Meghan have lost 3 staff members in the past 6 months, it does make you wonder.

  20. Glowing Kate! A flashback to 2012 I love it. Not a safe 'mommy-dress' but a sexy showstopper. William is a very lucky men to have an amazing woman like Kate by his side.

  21. It's a stunning look - I have been studying her 2012 debut of this dress and while same was equally beautiful, I think tonight slightly piqued same. I not sure what it is, the six years confidence of being a Duchess, her three babies or just being so comfortable in her own skin, she has a palpable radiance now that was not as noticeable before. William's obvious pride in her, also says it all.

Love the dress! So so glad to see it again after all this time. I feel like the platform shoes feel a little dated now, so a fresh shoe would have been fantastic, but overall I feel like this was a huge win for her. I also like that she is showing how she can shop her closet. ;) I think it is a subtle comment at using her fab dresses she already has (although we would have loved to see a new one, too), and not having to spend on new haute couture for every single event.

  25. OK, eagle eye Kate watchers, I just noticed Kate's right hand. Is she wearing a ring on the middle finger of her right hand or a band-aid (plaster?) of some sort?
